Why do people buy movies?

I really don't get it. The only movies I own are ones bought for me without me asking for them. How many times do you really watch a movie? I use netflix so I can watch a movie a 2nd time if I really really want to, but I think I may have done this with about 4 movies in my life.

What is the appeal?

I'm buying Star Trek in bluray next week so I have at least one bluray movie to show off my system.

Also, there is a lot of stuff on bluray that is not available on Netflix or at my local video store. So I could see buying some of them.

Many people have movies that they like to watch more than twice in their life. For them buying movies makes sense, for you it does not.

I rent 99% of what I watch but I will buy a series or movie I really like now and then.

For a series netflix can be slow to get all of the discs, and if a series goes out of print you might find some of the discs are very long wait or even unavailable.

I'll bet I've watched Wizard of Oz 20+ times easy. Apparently, you have no children.

Yeah, kids.

And some people collect em. I'd rather build my own library of books, but that's just me.

I do watch a fair number of movies more than once. I'm also impatient, so it's just easier to buy movies rather than have to wait. Plus it's nice to be able to browse my collection if I want to watch a movie but haven't decided exactly which one to watch.

It's fvcking sad for people to buy movies. They have some kind of a hoarding mentality combined with wanting to be into a hobby so their pitiful mind comes up with buying mass produced movies instead. I really do think big movie collections are a really sad mark on one's life. Only exception is if you really think you'll watch it several times, but that is definitely not the case for most people's "libraries".

You probably have a whole shitload of movies which is why you find this question 'dumb'.
I frankly think the people collecting movies are 'dumb'. You can also find boatloads of people trying to sell their 'collections' for chump change when they finally realize that they have no need for them.

I've bought a humber of movies because they're ones my g/f and I really like and will/have watched multiple times (TDK, Princess Bride, Monty Python Life of Brian and Holy Grail).

Others we bought because it was the same price to rent them. The 4 for 20 deal on used movies at Blockbuster. It's cheaper than renting if they're in the 5/20 section. We've gotten good movies that way to.

Also, series. like BSG or BoB where I don't want to have to run out to get the next disc.

And for clarity- I don't use Netflix, and probably never will. Just not my style. I don't really watch enough movies, and when I want to rent something, I want it now, not tomorrow or 3 days from now.

I buy them used, it costs about the same to own them as to rent them. I only buy the ones I know I will watch more than once. Friends and family borrow them all the time, gives us something to talk about. As long as they bring them back it works for me.

ah, i did that with iron man. that being said, i really actually do enjoy owning movies, and do watch them multiple times. The only problem (especially with Blu-rays) is that they are so expensive.

But flashlights, like trains potting, don't really make sense and that's why they are a good hobby. But movies? It's just so shallow and not even esoteric, it's just blah like "Hey, I collect CDS". Wow, really like a billion other people congratulations.

hoarding instinct. i rarely ever watch a film again, i used to buy dvds, but then i got netflix. dvd shelf is just money sitting on your wall that is gone forever. esp now that they are all obsolete thanks to bluray. there are too many films that are out there whether classics or new/indi films etc to spend time rewatching old stuff.

I have watched my collection at least twice over. Some more watched than others obviously, but every single movie I got have been watched at least twice by me. If you add in friends and family, I would say they average to about 3 times use at least.

i have an extensive library of both books and movies. some are for kids, some are mine. and yes, when im bored and want to watch a movie but theres nothing decent on tv ill grab an old movie and watch it. much better than goiing to the video store. if it doesnt suit your needs, dont buy them. but dont presume you can tell others that want to they cant do it.

I used to go out and buy whatever new DVD's came out on Tuesdays that looked interesting back in the day. Did that every week for a good two years or so and then got a ridiculous collection full of movies I didn't really care to watch a second time.

Ended up selling most of it off a few years later for $5 a DVD at a garage sale I had and now only get a few movies (now on blu-ray) as gifts at Christmas time.

This. I also have a sizable DVD collection. People borrow movies from me, I can always suggest a movie someone hasn't seen and hand it right to 'em. I like watching movies on DVD quite a bit, I never, ever watch a movie on TV. F edited versions/commercials/etc. I also really don't watch TV, instead, I throw a movie in. Some movie I own I've watched 20-30 times I'd say.

Children love particular movies and want to watch them over and over.

When I have people over and we decide to watch a movie, it's nice to be able to pick from a selection then the few I might have from just Netflix.

Simple, convenience...
