But flashlights, like trains potting, don't really make sense and that's why they are a good hobby. But movies? It's just so shallow and not even esoteric, it's just blah like "Hey, I collect CDS". Wow, really like a billion other people congratulations.

Why does it gall you so much? Each to his own no? You think flash-lights are made in smaller volumes than DVDs?

People collect whatever they want. They are not out to compete or look down at other people.

The same reason other people buy books, cars, video games, shoes or anything else that makes them happy.

It's fvcking sad for people to buy movies. They have some kind of a hoarding mentality combined with wanting to be into a hobby so their pitiful mind comes up with buying mass produced movies instead. I really do think big movie collections are a really sad mark on one's life. Only exception is if you really think you'll watch it several times, but that is definitely not the case for most people's "libraries".

All the movies get a good run through by myself/friends/family. Some of the rarer flicks (indie/foreign) may not get played more than once a year, but it's nice to have them if someone is looking for something "different" I can hand it right to them. Also, I ALWAYS bargain shop for movies. Especially since HD-HVD/BRD came out, DVDs are CHEAP. I just bought a collection of 24 movies off Woot for 40 bucks - that's $1.67 a movie. Hardly a bank breaker. I think it's pretty sad that you've got such a stick up your ass about people owning movies. How is it any different than someone who collects other things - music for example, how many people around here have upwards of 70-100GB of music on their computers. They can't possibly listen to all of it, there just isn't enough time in the day. Is that as big a negative mark on their lives?

I think it's "fucking sad" to insult other people just because they have a hobby that you don't share. The other day we had a thread posted about flashlight enthusiasts. I didn't even know such a thing existed. But I'm not going to claim that their interest in flashlights is "fucking sad" because it's no more sad than my own interest in billiards equipment. Everyone has a hobby, and as long as it's not doing any direct harm to you, what business is it of yours what brings them joy? The senseless need to tear other people down to feel better about yourself? That's a much better hobby than collecting movies...

I use clips from a lot of different movies in my classes.

Also, I only buy DVDs from the bargain bin, garage sales, etc. Over the long run, I probably spend less on DVDs than I would on netflix. Since I don't spend much time watching movies in the first place, netflix would waste more of my money than buying 2 dvd's a month would.

What exactly, is "shallow" about having thousands of hours of entertainment at your fingertips? I just don't see how "shallow" applies. Even better, who is arguing that owning a movie collection is "esoteric?"

I enjoy movies, even ones that I've seen so I will rewatch ones in my collection when I don't have much else to do. I also have a multitude of friends that hang out at my house. Sometimes we just chill and pick a movie to watch that they haven't seen from my collection. Pretty simple.

I'm also an avid reader but I find that after reading a book once I've pretty much memorized what happens so when I try to reread them I end up getting halfway through realizing I know what's next and then I stop. Movie's let me turn my brain off.

This thread is dumb. If I think I'll watch a movie 3-4 times, then it generally costs the same to buy it as rent it over and over. I've watched LOTR at least a dozen times. Some other ones I own (on DVD,HD, or BR) and watch periodically:

Full Metal Jacket
Dumb and Dumber
Office Space
Braveheart
Fifth Element
Indiana Jones
Serenity

There was a week about a year back where I watched Aliens everyday. Movies that I like I buy so i can re-watch them.

generally its based on the dodgy idea that you should be your friends library, and basically it comes down to the hoarding instinct where you collect it "just in case" you need it or need to lend it out. its entirely irrational. there was a time when getting your hands on a film was damn difficult, a reel of film, or an expensive cassette. selection was also very limited. then came rentals, and basically every film that was ever made worth watching is now accessible, so its basically pointless behavior.

Movies I think I'll only watch twice I don't buy.
Quite a few movies I own I've watched 3, 4 times.
A few movies I've watched multiple times before, I'm torn as to whether to buy on Blu-ray or not.
I cannot say how many times I've watched The Fountain. Movie is just impressive.

And, I rarely plan what movie I am going to watch when I watch a movie. To rent, I have to plan what movie I feel like I'll want to watch when I get it. But I'll stare at my collection of movies (some I bought on BD, and have yet to watch!), and ponder... what exactly do I feel like watching right now?
What is great about Blockbuster online is I can return a movie rented by mail, and go ponder at the wall o' Blu-ray and again, ponder. Oooo, I want to watch that! SOB it's not in. ok... OOO, that! Yes, it's in!

I've rented a movie and when it arrived, had zero motivation to watch it for sometimes a few weeks.

The only movies I'd ever buy are "Dumb and Dumber" and "Big Trouble in Little China", if they ever came out on BluRay. Anything else I'll just rent once.

I'm not at all confused regarding the evolution of media distribution. I am also aware that movies are very easily accessible at this point. I, however, would rather not spend the time/money driving to a rental facility to rent a movie that I could easier own. Especially when I'm going to watch it more than once.

So basically, to have any "worthwhile" collection that is not "shallow" the items must be difficult to obtain? Having a collection for the enjoyment of it isn't good enough? That's.. well, absurd.

I really don't get it. The only movies I own are ones bought for me without me asking for them. How many times do you really watch a movie? I use netflix so I can watch a movie a 2nd time if I really really want to, but I think I may have done this with about 4 movies in my life.

What is the appeal?

Your pretty much right for some people. There is one movie I have watched well over 15 times though. It is quite rare for me to do though so it must be really awesome.

I agree. I might watch a movie every 3-5 years, assuming I've forgotten major plot points. Otherwise, I have more than enough new content to keep me entertained. Buying movies is just a waste of money for me.

This. I also have a sizable DVD collection. People borrow movies from me, I can always suggest a movie someone hasn't seen and hand it right to 'em. I like watching movies on DVD quite a bit, I never, ever watch a movie on TV. F edited versions/commercials/etc. I also really don't watch TV, instead, I throw a movie in. Some movie I own I've watched 20-30 times I'd say.

I have a decent DVD collection too ... maybe 700 or 800 movies that I've picked up over the years .... I also DVR a lot of stuff off of TCM, AMC, IFC, and Sundance. I love movies. And I have a couple of favorites that I've seen way too many times, though most of my collection I've probably seen twice, and friends/family have borrowed about 1/2 of them over the years ....

It kinda is a waste of money, but it's nice to be able to watch whatever I want to watch whenever I want to watch it without having to "go" rent it, or "wait for netflix." Also, it's perfectly legal as opposed to just downloading everything

If I like a movie I watch it frequently. There are movies I've seen over a hundred times easily. I never pay more than $10 for a movie, and usually $5 or less, so the return on investment is enormous compared to any other entertainment expenditure.

hoarding instinct. i rarely ever watch a film again, i used to buy dvds, but then i got netflix. dvd shelf is just money sitting on your wall that is gone forever. esp now that they are all obsolete thanks to bluray. there are too many films that are out there whether classics or new/indi films etc to spend time rewatching old stuff.

With Netflix you're flushing money rather you watch movies or not, and even if you do then you have to send them back...so you're spending all that money and have NOTHING to show for it at the end.
