I see people in FS/ft trading and buying and selling them like they are going out of style. I havea friend too, he has 70 dvds, and his collection keeps growing.

WTF is up with this DVD crap? Are you guys trying to get ahold of as many as you can so you can rip them??

I am confused

If collecting movies in DVD format is weird, in what format should we get them, VHS? C'mon..

I have the same question. It's not like they're going to be worth anything as collectors items. Some people seem to love having hundreds of DVDs. You'd have to watch the movie several times to break even and I'm sure that the vast majority of people will never get their money's worth out of this vs. rental fees so I guess the reason people do them is because they like to see shelf after shelf of DVD in their own place instead of a movie store.

WHY?

It'd be like buying a bunch of CDs so you can record them to tape.

with vhs
watching movies at home just plained sucked

with dvd
you can have a experience at home similar to a real theather.

the dvd experience revolutionized the face of home entertainment. Collectors of DVDs are merely capturing a piece of modern history!

yup that's what i think...

IF it's a movie I know I will watch more then 3-4 times in the future, I will usually buy it, costs works out the same and then at least I have it whenever I decide to watch it, dont' have to run to the video store.

I know that I collect them, because I like getting movies that I love and enjoy. Viewing them in my own living room, with DD5.1 cranked. no, I'm not going to try and sell them for a profit anytime, I just enjoy having a library that I know I can watch over and over without being bored... its not like i buy every single DVD that's released, only stuff i like... (i've only got about 50)

My collection is around 300 DVDs at an average price of just over $10. Watch each one two or three times and we're at break even. Sometimes, I may just watch the movie with the audio commentary or catch the deleted scenes on the 2nd or 3rd go 'round. It's nice to plop in a movie on a cold, wet day or when I'm not feeling well enough to go to work or clean up the house and crank the surround sound and fire up the widescreen tele.

Besides, seems whenever I go to the video store I have about 75% of their inventory on my own shelf and most of what's left are movies I wouldn't even rent anyway.

Not really because with mp3s, most of the time you can't tellt he difference. Ripping a movie to divx rips out the Dolby Digital and makes the picture look like crap.

With my original tape analogy, you're losing quality which is what ripping to divx does.

I only buy DVD's that I know I will watch more than once, otherwise its a waste of money for me.

350 movies at 2 hours each, watched 3 times is just about the same number of hours as one year of working full-time. I don't know how anyone could spend that much time in front of a TV. If you watch a different movie every day it would take a year just to go through them once!

Why do people keep things at all?
I think its because we are materialistic. We want things, and we want to keep things we enjoyed.

Personally, I'd like to collect a lot of movies. Among those of course is the expected LOTR, Star Wars, Gladiator etc.

Me too. I buy mostly Anime DVDs since a huge majority of them you can't easily find in rental stores. As for regular movies, I only buy the few that I know and love and know that I'd watch many times.

Most people cannot afford 5.1 sound setups ANYWAY.

So you are confined to stereo sound in both cases.

As for DivX being "lower quality" you obviously haven't seen a recent rip with automatic two-pass DivX v4.11 and mp3 at 192kbps.

It is indistinguishable from the DVD. And it barely fills an 80 min CD.

ROTFL! Get this guy some glasses and a hearing aid!!

And how many people like to sit at a computer to watch a movie? I dunno about you, but I'd rather sit on a couch and watch it in comfort.

Well, if someone would like to forward me a source I'd be glad to look at it. Any of them that I've seen look far worse than a DVD and have digital artifacts.

OMG...I'm going to be sick. Kami and I agree on something.

I love movies, that's one reason why I collect DVDs. I have seen so many movies that I simply "must have", because movies bring you to a place and time when you watched them. At the moment, I am waiting on my DVDs for Macross -- TV show I watched as a child.

There are definitely DVDs that I could chop out of my collection, but a good deal of them are great flicks that don't deserve being sold back yet.
