heh not to mention that you actually lose a little screen area with divx ussually. in order to crop correctly atleast you must crop into the picture woo!

Did you just insult everyone who uses SVHS and is happy enough with it?

hey hey, they don't sell svhs movies right? and encoding two pass divx on the fly with audio with any ease at all is completely impossible right now

Cable TV is SVHS quality also. Do you watch cable TV? Are you a thief?

that was in reference to stealing dvds..i wasn't basing the idea of theft on quality you know. i don'ot know how you interpreted it so worng

If u ask me collectin DVD's is a waste. You would be much better financially if you rented them. This isn't a DVD/VHS debate. Its a why do you spend money on DVD's when you know you aren't getting you $ out of it.

That is like saying eating out is a waste of money. You could alway cook your food and it almost alway cheaper (time & money wises)... And I bet you do eat out occassionally...

Some people like to collect dvds because they know they always could watch it again, whenever they want. Not the five days limited where you must run out to return it before they charge you for late fee. (The trouble of going to the store to rent and return it turn me off more than anything.) If your friends/relatives/neighbors that want to borrow it from you, then it would not cost them a cent.

are you referring to shoplifters? what do shoplifters have to do with divx?

stealing and theft have NOTHING to do with divx. copyright infringement MAY in certain cases be applicable. but that is also subject to a complicated set of facts and laws.

That is absolute bull. Whoever taught you to rip DivX in this butcherlike manner should not be allowed anyhere near a computer.

A proper DivX rip is indistinguishable from the DVD.

i think you know what i meant. i'm talking about ppl that download movies all the time because they are too cheap to even rent dvds. i know some ppl like that. yes i know divx can be used legally, in fact i do it so i can play stuff on my super slim dvdless laptop sometimes, but i'm probably in the minority.

That is called copyright infringement. It is not theft, and it is not stealing.

Theft is when you go into a shop and shoplift a DVD.

how is this bull? do you not crop your dvds? do you not crop away any small black border in order to save bitrate and thus improve picture? sure you can encode that black border if you want but its probably not worth it for divx purposes.

A proper DivX crop should have dimensions in multiples of 16.

Although DivX 4.X relaxes this restriction, it is best to stick to it for performance purposes. When your dimensions are in multiples of 16, decoding is much faster and smoother, which is useful especially on slower CPU's.

Sometimes, leaving a little bit of black on the top and bottom is necessary to achieve proper dimensions. That is something I can live with.

Could you please post some kind of file to back this up? It doesn't have to be big, but I'd like to see this for myself and not just take your word for it.

You also can't compare mp3s to divx because when it comes to video, compression is less forgiving than with audio.

You could use Netflix and not have to worry about rushing out to return or having a late fee.
Also, with anime stuff, take for instance, the Macross DVDs mentioned above:
It's a 9-disc set, less than 10,000 copies were released worldwide. Good luck finding this at any rental shop. Add to this it's 900 minutes long and good luck actually getting through it in 5 days.

There are some things you just can't rent.

While my dvd collection is small compared to others (~25 dvds) I primarily purchase them because I do like having a collection of movies for people to watch when they come on by. DVDs are just a piece of the entertainment area which consists of a decent sized TV, 5.1 speakers, a bar, and a foosball table. I'll readily admit that some of the movies I own I've only watched once and may never watch again. Do I feel a need to justify my purchasing of dvds? Not really. Just like I wouldn't really question why people spend $8.50 to see a movie in the theaters, if it's a movie that they wouldn't classify as a "must-see" in the first place.

Go to your favorite filesharing network and search for divx.

How will I know I'm getting the best? I've downloaded divx before and it didn't meet the quality that you say. I was hoping I could get something that is exactly what you're talking about to be sure it wasn't just the files I've received.

You'll know it when you see it.

If the movie that you download doesn't satisfy you quality wise, download another one.

Trust me when I say that there are a whole lot of DivX'es out there with quality comparable to a DVD.

I've ripped a few movies and I'll admit that they're not exactly dvd-quality (obviously), but the quality is pretty amazing considering that it can fit on one or two cds. And back to the original question, I like using them as frisbees. j/k

Well, it's really not worth it to me. It sounds like a wild goose chase. What if I'm never satisfied but have downloaded the highest quality divx?
