<< Only you would support something when you have no clue as to what it is. >>

I support the idea that DivX is perceptually excellent quality, as voiced by Mister Progressive Trifocal.

I do not support the use of progressive trifocals because I do not know what they are. Presumably they give you Superman-like vision (from the context).

<< There is no disputing what I see, either, as I have triple prescription progressive trifocal high index lenses on my nose >>

And I have eyes that work 100% perfectly without glasses. No wonder you can't see a difference, you're looking through 5 inches of unbreakable glass...

You missed the high index part. 1/8 " at the thickest. 3 scrips - no lines- lower*reading-middle*computer (arm's length)-upper*driving (distance). There is nothing I can't handle. It's just that occasionally I look like a bobbing head that you see in the rear window of some cars. And I have made some divx backups with no discernible difference in viewing.

This interesting question is a little vague. Do you mean: rather than rent them, rather than go to theaters, rather than spending money on other luxuries?

Here's why this movie lover collects, in no particular order:

-astonishing quality. Beats any other format hands down, especially with a decent HT, which I'm lucky enough to be able to afford.
-Form factor convenience. They play on my notebook for travel and fit in plastic CD sleeves, but also take my home theater to the limit.
-lendability. Lots of folks are just starting off their DVD collections. I help them get the most out of their players.
-interesting extra features.
-trading/resale potential. I sell ones I grow tired of for more than I paid for them, with very little effort. Trading is easy too.
-Packaging. Laugh if you like, but I like having the multi-page booklet inserts, nicely labled keep-cases, etc.
-ready access to a movie library. I really like being able to recall a scene from a great flick, and then simply pulling it out to view.
-far more convenient then renting. No getting the films, no returns, no waiting for netflix, hoping they have what you want.
-I like supporting great products. When an artist makes a great film, or a studio produces a reasonably priced, well-done DVD, I like endorsing them with my pocketbook.
-english subtitles, baby. My hearing is fine, but I miss plenty of dialogue in a noisy movie. Not with most DVDs.

I have around 500 DVDs. The first 200 or so were purchased in the good old days of dotcom maina, where you could get them for next to nothing using brandsforless/coupons/rebates etc. Now, too keep my costs down, I buy primarily columbia house memberships and good condition blockbuster previously owned DVDs. My average price for DVDs is around $8-9, including box sets. (This average has crept up some over the last year.)

In short, because DVDs offer superb entertainment value for the $, and are highly "liquid" (tradable/sellable), they are the only thing I find worth collecting other than books. (I've never purchased a VHS tape.)

I have 240 dvds in my collection for one reason.........I like being lazy!

I like the fact that when I want to watch a movie, I don't have to go out in 20 below weather, drive to Blockbuster and give them $4 for something that in 2-5 days I have to go out in 20 below weather and return the video. Now it's $4 if I remember to bring it back on time and if I don't, it's now $8 for a dvd I rented when I could have spent about the same price to own. Even with the higher prices and less abundance of deals, the average cost per dvd in my collection is about $9.

Hi, Terri.

Thanks for sharing.

We've all been through that so feel welcomed here.

DVD has been a blessing for me. I'm an avid collector of japanese animation.
VHS tapes usually cost $25-35 for 1 or 2 episodes. Now i get both sub and dubbed on the same disc, plus extra episodes and features.

There's just something about it....

I just went out tonight to buy a cd and came home with a dvd instead....

i think i'm up past 70 or so total now...several i've never watched (but i DID unwrap them!)

my best example is the movie amadeus. i bought it in 1998, for about 35 dollars (this was a LONG time ago)

and still haven't watched it to this day (i've seen the movie before, but haven't watched the dvd)

i guess i just like to have a bunch around so that if i ever have people over, they most likely will not have seen something!

oh yeah, and i like lots of action movies, even if they're pretty bad, cause they strain the A/V system

still, i just don't see you as a good person to judge quality the room for improvement in picture quality is far more then audio. until video is so detailed that its "real" you won't mistake video for the real thing. audio is far closer to that reality.
