First it was Hitler's Germany, now it is the Arab Countries. What could the jewish people have possibly done to deserve or provoke such persecution?

Most people hate the unknown, so they hate people who are different. Or they envy them for whatever reason.

Same with the hate between the West and the Middle East, Right and Left, even between different groups of Christians, Muslims or Jews.

Yes, I know persecution of the Jews didn't start with Hitler, my mistake. I was just thinking about recent history.

Uhh... they are responsible for starting the tradition of circumcision?

I cannot understand why you wouldn't want to be. The thought of cottage cheese growing on my junk disturbs me

I made a mistake once by taking a GF of mine to an Orthodox wedding....guy I knew at work. Neither of us were Jewish and had no idea what was to come. They made us sit on different sides of the aisle...men on the right, women on the left. My GF was pissed at that since she knew on-one there except me. When they walked the bride down the aisle wrapped in a veil from head to toe, including her face, (like a pig to slaughter my GF said), she got so mad she up and walked out. What a scene...my GF was even pissed at me about that.

Many reasons to hate are out there, not all of them unknown.

No, I am not a "dirty guy". I just think not being circumsized would be gross.

That is a really complicated question. The persecution of the Jews by Hitler and the Natzis is completely different from the situation in the Middle East.

Because a) they never changed their traditions/culture to fit that of the culture around them. If you look back at all the different conquering societies that have ruled over the Jews, none of them have ever managed to force their style of life or culture upon the Jewish people. Many other groups, when they were forced to give up their traditions, probably looked upon the Jews with envy/hatred. 2) This is also sort of a myth... but Jews have traditionally been the bankers in most societies, money-changers (has something to do with them being allowed to practice usury) - even in times of trouble, the Jews were comparatively wealthy, and took care of their own - much like the Mormons do now, only over the span of something like 2000 years.

That's all I can think of.

Lots of students from the Middle East are at my university (sponsored by Saudi Aramco Oil). I don't think they hate Jews, they just don't like Israelis. One of them once said that they could marry a Jew and people back home would be OK with it, but if it was an Israeli, people wouldn't be OK with it.

jpucci1, that Gf of mine was a real women's-lib type. She saw that wedding scene as a real put-down to all women, for the sake of a stupid tradition. I tend to agree with her on that one. Too bad she didn't stay for the reception. Again guys on one side, women on the other...a big curtain down the middle so the different sexes were completely separate. The men were even dancing with each other....

No this doesn't make me hate anyone....but I think it made my GF pretty mad about it.

Agreed.

Difference in custom and tradition is no reason for hate.

There's some quote that goes like, "I don't understand therefore I don't like." I find it ironic that your girlfriend said it was like a pig to be slaghtered.

I went to my friend's funeral, it was a Catholic funeral. The priest hardly talked about my friend, it was all about Jesus. I found it disturbing coming from my background and didn't like it; it gave no start to closure on his death. However, because of that, I don't hate Catholics! :Q

Grow up, differences in custom/tradition/religion are never reason to hate.

By the way, I'm Jewish, and I have no real firm idea why we are hated by some. I guess it is because we are stereotypically better off than most religions are by percentage. We have 400% more Senators than one would think based on population, there are more Jews in higher places than the percentages would lead one to believe. I think this comes from Judaism's emphasis on community and concentrating on life, not afterlife.

Another possibility is residual hate that is taught. Over the years the Jewish people have been persecuted for all sorts of reasons. Whether by the Spanish Inquisition for being heathens, by many Europeans for not contracting the plague in high numbers (because hygeine is detailed in Judaism, yet the Catholic Church did not encourage bathing...), or (jumping ahead) not being in as terrible economic condition as most Germans before WW2, by Arabs in the Middle East for getting Israel (or even not getting Israel...Jews were persectuted in the Middle East long before Israel was formed again), by some lower class people who had lived in the America and had roots here yet didn't get ahead while Jews were able to come to this country with nothing but save it and eventually move up to the middle and upper classes, etc. All of these things made people hate Jews for whatever deluded, self pitying, illogical reasons and then they taught their children...and then...you get the idea. Hate is taught.

Anyway, simple reason some people hate Jews is that there isn't one, but as mentioned above there are reasons that people MADE to hate Jews even though they are not logical reasons to hate anyone.

My sister is a somewhat of a "women's-lib type" (she's an ARTIST :Q)and she is modern Orthodox and just got married a few weeks ago. She wore a dress with no sleeves (just covered the shoulder) and had a normal veil, there was mixed dancing and separate (but on the same dance floor) and the wedding was a blast for everyone. Of course, she doesn't label herself as anything but Jewish, but in reality she is modern Orthodox but has her personal beliefs as well. You went to a traditional Orthodox wedding and they do things differently, but so what? Just because you're gf is "women's-lib" doesn't mean others should have to be.
