Why do people own pickup trucks?

Unless you need it for work and carry lumber around or something, I see no purpose to pickup trucks. They are stupid, ugly and usually the drivers are of a certain "persuasion". I see these a lot in downtown metro areas, and just am annoyed at them.

I can understand why one would want a large luxurious SUV (like an Escalade or decked out Sequoia, etc), and I fall into this camp myself. But why would you want to essentially chop the back half off and leave it open to the cold weather and snow outside? How are you going to transport people around? Doesn't make sense to me.

Better gas mileage. Utility. Style.

But apparently no reason really matters since you've already made up your mind, ignorantly judging everyone who owns one.

You're annoyed by them? Really? As in, you're driving down the road next to someone who's driving one, they're minding their own business, and you can't help but blow a gasket simply because they chose to drive a truck?

Do you really not know or are you trolling?

If you really don't know, the best reasons to own a truck, other than just wanting one, are towing trailers/boats and hauling material.

Some people like me just like the way they look. Sit up high. Oh and you can haul/tow stuff as well if needed. I have never owned a truck but it may be my next vehicle purchase.

So you can 'pickup' stuff. I find myself needing a pick up very frequently, so much so that I'll probably get one as a 2nd/3rd car.

And thanks to the OP's racist comments I'll be getting some truck nuts for the trailer hitch.

Not everyone lives in a 500 square foot apartment in a congested metro area.

Um...trucks have considerably more utility than SUVs. A lot of people who own pickups actually use them to haul bikes/snowmobiles/jetskis, make trips to Home Depot for supplies, carry furniture, gardening equipment, etc.

If you want to just haul people, drive a sedan or wagon, and use half the amount of gas as some pig-ass SUV.

So many white guys blasting crappy country music in their lifted trucks in the middle of a suburb.

Turn off the music and remove the tacked on steps that help you into your car.

Many people who own trucks do not use them as trucks. It is a "just in case I need to use it" mentality.

I think if this is what you're getting at, then the answer is psychological or image related.

You've obviously never parked out in the backwoods to watch the stars. SUV are like parking in a living room, just doesn't cut it.

Why do people own SUV/soccer mum cars?

You don't need a 4x4 that has a climate control leather seats etc etc to get your kids to school. You don't need 4x4 to go over the speed bumps at the mall or haul nappies. I see no purpose to them except they are a status symbol. Basically men that work in offices with tiny manicured hands.

I can understand why someone would drive a pickp truck (Like a Hilux/tacoma or an F150) I fall into this camp myself. But why would you keep the back half on? How are you gonna transport a couch, refrigerator or lumber?

At least raised trucks still have function, no matter how retarded they are.

Lowered trucks are an abomination. I hate jackasses that want to ride around in some truck where the panels are barely above the street surface.

I don't get lowering vehicles, period. But doing it to a truck where it removes the whole point of the name "truck", it's just ridiculous.

With the purchase of my own home the attractive characteristics of truck ownership grow constantly. I would prefer a truck to an SUV since I wouldn't have to worry about getting it dirty/ruining the interior with all my planned projects

I can see them useful if you like to haul a lot of items you would normally not want INSIDE, such as construction materials, big toys like 4wheelers and skidoos etc. ex: people who like to go camping a lot.

Otherwise then yeah, I prefer a smaller to mid size vehicle.

I'm actually debating myself if I want a truck or a car as my next vehicle. Right now if I want to do a house project where I need to buy big stuff from the hardware store I need to borrow a truck.
