Why do people randomly bump old threads?

I noticed that sometimes, (like now) people, usually n00bs, decide to plunge into the depths of old posts and revive ones that are weeks, even months old. If wouldn't be so bad if they actually had something interesting to add to it, but the ones I'm looking at now seem to be general purposeless neffing. I mean, if you're going to bump a thread that wasn't even particularly interesting or popular to begin with, at least have a good reason. There are plenty of currently active ones that you can add to if you just want to nef! Sheesh.

I noticed this today in the software forum. Someone was asking about the video game "Sniper" that just was released, and today, a member with one post bumped it to the top posting only "nice..." or something equally dumb

Go to Customize and look for "Would you like to see the most recent Replied To thread at the top?" and change it to "No".

Problem Solved...

Because some people use the "Search" Function and find things that they would originally post themselves and create a new thread, or would rather throw their comment or question into an already existing thread.

I do it sometimes instead of putting repost.
I bump the old thread with identical title and the new thread that the noob just posted at the same time.

This thread seems to be generally purposeless with no other redeeming value than to add to the originators post count. In other words, this thread is a nef!

I am going to crap on this thread. Months later, I will sniff it out to crap on it again so my crap will float to the top.

Yes, it's perfectly understandable if they're adding information to a thread or answering a yet to be answered question, etc., but the ones I'm talking about dig up random threads which were pretty much nefs in the first place, and add trite comments like "nice..." or "that's cool." It's just annoying IMO.

Let's see my own observation: Amnesiac 2.0 has been opening threads to complain about people's posts.

Geez, chill, Amnesiac 2.0. I occasionally post in old threads. Mind you, I'm no newbie; and I couldn't care the least about my post count. I post in old threads when the subject is interesting and I have something meaningful to add to it. Or I post in the thread when I think it is something worth noting because it was buried quickly by the many new topics AT gets every minute. An example of such would be the MIT free online courses thread.

Most of the time, no one responds to old threads. So, let it take its natural cause and get buried again because no one responds to it.

Amnesiac, I get your point, but is it worth opening another thread just to state your pet peeve? You know you could have bumped the pet peeve thread to state this pet peeve of yours.

In Visual Basic, yes. In C+ or C#, no. Or is that Java?? Hrm... I dunno.

nik

I know postcount = postcount + 1 would work in C as well. dunno about C++/C#/Java.

C is pretty much the only real programming language I'm somewhat familiar with.

I figure people bump old treads for no reason at all. Or beacuse they have a thought 5 days after a thread was posted, then decide to post it.
