It means they're a decent human who is sorry for imposing their noxious material on your day. The real question is why secondary people feel the need to comment when someone sneezes.

I feel the same way. I normally don't say anything if someone sneezes. On another note a friend of mine says "God bless you" when someone sneezes, yet claims to be atheist.

It is probably better to say "Excuse me!" when you fart instead of "Woah, that's going to REALLY stink! I think it left a mark!"

iirc, came from the idea that your spirit could be blown out of you nose when you sneezed.

I could mis remember.

Whatever the origin, the phrase has become part of our customs. Many folks (mostly 'youts') disparage the polite formalities of culture and custom but, they serve a very real purpose. They provide 'lubrication' to society made up of dissimilar backgrounds and cultures. In short, they prevent sparks from erupting out of our pointy heads and causing fires.

It's just being conscious of your pollution. All manners are odd, but they grease the gears.

My kid, 11, says, "Whoa, didn't see that coming."

Cheeky twerp must get his smart mouth from his Mother.

"Yeah, because you still have yours."

but 'excuse me' isnt polite, it is just stupid

saying 'excuse me' will do nothing for the smell of the fart
Look, dick head, squeeze your cheeks. Stay out of public. Adjust your carb intake. Spit in.

My $0.02.........I didn't really mean the dick head part.

farting, burping yes. say sorry. youre making other people uncomfortable.

if someone sneezes? i say nothing. for one, im not the one who sneezed, and if the sneezer is not expected to say something then im not either. and 2nd, when someone says god bless you it means they believe in ghosts. i dont, so it would be wrong of me to say it.

You expel just as much shit in the air, probably more when you sneeze. I actually sneeze into my shirt to minimize the dispersal and so I don't cover my hands in snot.

"God bless you" may contain the word god, but it is not infer one is religious. Only repugnant atheist people would actually believe this (I'm not religious).

A person who sneezes should say, excuse me. To which a polite person would say Gesundheit or, God bless you. You don't say it because you are German or, believe in God. You say it because it is a polite formality of the culture you live in unless, you live outside the U.S.

people say god bless you because they think demons flew into the sneezers mouth while it was open. because demons cant get in any other time.

Why do people address each other by name? It should be enough to simply point and say 'you.' Or, even better, refer to them by their physical attributes. There's no ambiguity there. People will know who you're talking about, since physical attributes are based on reality, unlike names. Just say 'Overweight Female' or 'Balding male.' Names are an archaic tradition anyway, based on tribalism and religion as well.

Enlightened freethinkers should never use names. Stop the old-fashioned narrowminded use of names!
