Why do people smoke? (Cigarrettes)

I can't get over this question that has stuck with me for a few months now and I would honestly like to know why people smoke. I really don't think there any positive motives that I know of and so much negative on the other hand.

If you would enlighten me, I would be appreciative.


I second question I put up to you that do smoke-
Is it worth the negative things such as the thousands of dollars a year you could put to other uses?

Thanks for the point, i am specifically talking about ciggarettes. Weed is a different matter.

I know alot of people I've known have told me it's a stress relievers. I know of better ones myself...

Because (1) it's extremely addicting, and (2) because people around them smoke, and as a result they take it up for social acceptance.

I smoke because it mellows me out (most times). Other than that I cant give you a better reason.

Speaking for myself, I smoke about a pack a week. And usually, most of the pack is smoked within a night or two. For the most part, I am a social smoker. I cant stand to smoke in the morning, and I'll smoke maybe 1 or 2 (if any at all) cigarettes during the day. But once or twice a week I'll go out and have a few drinks and thats when I have to light one up every 5 minutes.

Eh, it feels good when you start, and it's a contintiation once you start. Plus, it's something to do when you drink.

peer pressure... no one picks up smoking tabacco voluntarily because it tastes good.. it's fcking nasty and everyone knows that. They want to be cool so they force themselves to smoke and eventually they are hooked
