Why do some balding men pick the "friar" look?

By friar look, I mean totally shaved on top and a well maintained circle of hair all around. Why bother? Why not shave it all off? I've seen many men do that and I've always found that it makes them look older and obviously balding, when I thought the whole point of shaving is to create the illusion that it's your choice, right?

edit: sorry for the atrocious typos. I need coffee...

Do women actually like that? I know there's not a one-fit solution and that women differ, but i find it hard to believe that anyone would find that appealing since it makes every men look like a high school english teacher.

Uh, speak for yourself! I don't sport the friar look just for the reasons u've stated. I'm bald and I shave every other day to keep it that way!

He's not talking about big bushy hair on the sides of his head. We're talking about cutting it really short. I'm very bald on top but I keep it all cut at probably less than a 1/4 inch long. Keeping a clean-shaved head is a lot of work. Women seem to think that I look great.

Although I keep my head shaved most of the time, you would be surprised how much heat even a little bit of hair on the back of your head retains ... during ski season I'll let what hair I do have grow to about 1/2 inch & it really helps.

Good thing you keep it short. I have a good buddy with red hair. If it grows to long he looks like Bozo the Clown

Yup. I shave my head once a week, but that's not realistically often enough. It should be every 3 days or so. Eletric clippers only cut so far, and so I end up shaving with a safety razor. Takes about 30 min to get a close shave. Then there is the fact that you have to do it carefully or you cut / inflame the skin, making you look worse than with hair.

I would be cue ball more often, but I'm too lazy. So it's often up to 1/4" long or maybe even a little more around the sides and back. I don't shave the top when I'm doing that, though. Don't know anyone who does. That would be weird.

They aren't shaving the top. It's bald up there. They just let what hair they have grow.

It's called extreme male pattern baldness.

You're speaking of the last stage.

BTW, I'm at #3 and holding at 40. But I'm sure I'll lose a bit more in old age.

Why do some men pick the fatass out of shape Indian smoker look? It just looks like crap.

Monks tend to be excellent at unarmed combat but have strict armor limitations. And depending which system you're playing by, might get some clerical powers.

I work with a guy who wears a hat everyday to hide his skirted egg .You would not even know he was bald on top.

I'd say that if you can pull a decent Cpt. Picard look then thats MUCH better that shaving it all off. Picard is the epitome of old guy coolness.
