Why do the majority of people here like DDR better than RDRAM??

btw there's an interesting thread on Beyond3D about why RDRAM hasn't ever been used for video cards. most of the people there are as clueless as us about the technicalities (like WHY does it have this amount of latency etc) but some of them at least think they know...

I'm pretty sure the PS2 uses RDRAM for frame buffer and main memory, not quite a video card, but interesting nonetheless.

I believe the date is early to mid July. In other words, VERY soon.

Have you got a link to this info? . . . I just might wait a few weeks and work a little extra overtime.

If this is really going to happen at this low price point, it is not much more than a DDR SDRAM P4 system (I figure about $70 more).

The ONLY info I could find about the price was from Tom's Hardware and it was $375 for the MB and RAM.

Here
A 256 MB module is bundled with the package, and that's it. The manufacturer offers the motherboard in two versions. The first version is bundled with PC4200 memory that runs at 533 MHz. The cost for this package is $375.
A factory upgrade to 512 MB RDRAM is not possible.

Now where's your info? . . . if it seems too good to be true . . .

Attacks on the PC1066 are pure FUD. Keep up the good work defending the better solution, fkloster. Obviously there could be an even better solution if Intel realyy wanted it, but RDRAM is the better of the three current choices; SDR, DDR, and RDRAM.

If people want to defend the DDR latency then simply look at SDR. The SDR at 200MHz will have better latency than DDR. If bandwidth is unimportant than SDR should be all of the rage in overclocking!!

Define "better". No one here has really sugggested that PC1066 isn't the highest performing solution for the P4. However, it has been suggested that it is also the most expensive solution.

And I LOVE to buy the new Asus board together with 512MB of HiPerf RDRAM for less than $300 - the price/performance choice would be quite clear for me then - IF it were true.

go about half way down the page under "World's Fastest Ram: RIMM 4200 (32-bit RDRAM)"

3937 MB/s! @158fsb

You might want to wait for this board apoppin
I know I am.

Actually, I am waiting for more information.

According to JackBurton this Asus P4T533 motherboard and 512Mb Samsung RIMM 4200 will be bundled for less than $300. Tom's Hardware calls this bundle MB and 256MB RIMM 4200 at $375. The first is an incredible bargain I would wait for; the second is out of my price range.

apoppin, you do realize that this fancy new Asus P4T-533 bundle is probably only 'marginally' faster then a ddr 400 rig for the P4 and prolly costs a 'lil' more? You prolly will not notice the difference in performance

So, are you dumping your setup and getting one?

Well, you know apoppin, I have analyzed it, and even though it is faster, I can't justify the additional $20 and would not see faster 'REAL WORLD' performance gain from what I have.

So you ARE getting the new MB and hi-perf RAM.

EDIT: I'd love to stay and discuss further but I am off to work for an extra shift - perhaps I can don't have to be late on rent after all and can still afford the RDRAM sytem.

Peace and aloha,
Mark

Here you go man, what you've been waiting for...The P4T533 w/ 512MB of RIMM4200.
The P4T533 is no exception, coming in at more than $300. The price doesn?t tell the whole story however. Along with the motherboard, you also get a 512MB module of RIMM 4200.
And to make the deal even sweeter, it is a SINGLE 512MB stick!!! :Q By the way, I never said it was UNDER $300, I said it was about $300. So I'm expecting it to be around $325-375 when it is released. Still a bargain.

Here is another link verifying that the P4T533 will come with a single 512MB RIMM4200 stick.

I noticed my SDR-latency comment went right over the gallery's head.

not true, it's just that you take it too far, and I forgot to comment (plus I wasn't entirely sure if you were being serious).

heh, bandwidth IS important, it's just that the actual amount of data going to the CPU at any given point in time isn't always the maximum theoretical bandwidth, which is why DDR SDRAM appears to achieve better scores but without the insanely high bandwidth claims.

Thank-you, JackBurton. It looks like Tom's got it wrong (again), hopefully. And "around" $300 is reason enough for me to wait (by then a new stepping of the 1.6A may even be out at a few bucks cheaper).

No problem man. As I said before, I was about to purchase an Asus P4B533-V mobo and Mushkin's Hi Perf Level 2 PC2100 (512MB stick), until I read about the expected price of the P4T533 bundle. That's what I'm waiting for as of right now. But if the P4T533 bundle doesn't come in at the expected ~$300 range, I'll go with my initial DDR choice.

I originally planned to get the Epox 4G4A. If this does come to pass with the RDRAM, please let me know when it is released (and I'll try to do the same for you if I hear first). Thanks again.

OK, guys - I'm out of here (both sides can stop ridiculing me for now) and you can get on with your flame war . . . err, discussion.

I prefer RDRAM better if the futus of them were ldentical, that is, new ones come out every now and then, improvements....
It was a pitty how RDRAm has slowly died off, taking with it a potential to be a fast, viable ram option.

We all know the futute of Rambus is uncertain. How does this really effect the future of RDRAM?

If Rambus is found guilty of anti-trust violations and RDRAM makers are no longer required to pay them royalties, won't that make RDRAM a more attractive and inexpensive solution?
