I've never been asked for insurance. If you cancel insurance, the DMV will be notified, and it'll turn up when they check your info.

They only say "license and registration" in NY. They don't need to ask for proof of insurance. That's all in the computer system. License allows them to check you, the driver. Registration allows them to check the car, and whether or not it's insured. The moment your insurance lapses in NY, the insurance company is required by law to notify the state DMV. I'm not sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if they have the information on your inspection as well (i.e., you can't just get an inspection sticker on some black market, because the vehicle must be hooked up to a computer that connects to the state DMV for your car to pass, unless it's older than a certain year.)

So, that's the sensible way to do it. If you let your insurance lapse, you'll get mail immediately from the state DMV that says, "surrender your plates." A simple run of your plate number will let any officer know if your insurance is current. And, despite insurance being god awful in NY, it's also why we have one of the lowest percentages of uninsured drivers in the US. (NY is the 3rd lowest.) It's really nice to know that someone didn't just buy a $500 beater, get to keep the plates from the previous owner (that's a really stupid policy), and if they get into an accident, have no insurance, and no way to pay for the damages they did.

Egads, there are states with more than 20% uninsured drivers on the road. It appears that the people in some states really ought to rethink how you're able to check for insurance and get those idiots off the road. http://www.iii.org/fact-statistic/uninsured-motorists

You're lucky. For me it's always "License, Registration, Insurance....and...put that back in your pants."

In that leather booklet case with manual and other stuff, I keep my current reg and insurance info. Even if the glove box ends up a mess, getting my info is easy. Though I haven't been pulled over in 6 years.

its license, registration AND insurance
When I got pulled over years ago, it was only license and registration. In NY, if you don't have insurance, your license plate is suspended and I'm sure that would come up when they run your plate.

As long as the insurance information (or lack thereof) comes up when they run the plates, how is this any different from states where you have to surrender the plates? They could just as easily be driving around in a $500 beater that they canceled the policy on. Or a recently-purchased $500 beater with fake ebay plates, or stolen plates.

Love your signature... Adm. Hyman Rickover.

“Responsibility is a unique concept... You may share it with others, but your portion is not diminished. You may delegate it, but it is still with you... If responsibility is rightfully yours, no evasion, or ignorance or passing the blame can shift the burden to someone else. Unless you can point your finger at the man who is responsible when something goes wrong, then you have never had anyone really responsible.”

That takes a lot more effort. I recently sold my old van for a few hundred dollars. The people who bought it paid, got a receipt, and had to go to the DMV to get it registered, get a new plate, etc. They could not possibly have left my house without having the vehicle insured.

You mentioned canceling insurance. Egads! Believe it or not, NY is smarter than you think. You can NOT legally cancel your insurance until the plates are surrendered. If I called my insurance company right now and said, "I'd like to cancel my insurance," they'd say, "uh, your vehicle still has the plates, so no." The only way for your insurance to be canceled is to miss a future payment.

Again, let me remind you, NY has the 3rd lowest percentage of uninsured drivers, at just a few percent, compared to over 20% for some states. You really think that's a coincidence? Or perhaps because of better policies? Massachusetts beat us (ready for Godwin's law?) - they have even worse DMV Nazis than we have.

Asshole motorcycle cops gave me a fix-it ticket for not having my proof of insurance on me, even though they knew I was insured when they ran my plates. A friend and I were just riding down the street and we saw them coming the other way, bust a u-turn and light us up. Still pissed over that. Even the cop that signed off on the fix it ticket said it was an asshole thing to do.

It could also be for the same reason that you always have to cock a gun on TV, or why computers always make beeping noises when they do something: Audiences expect it, and that it can be more profitable to appeal to a stupid demographic.

I've never been asked for Registration. Is that really a thing? Every state I have been in you put a sticker on your license plate.
