Why do V8s have that awesome 'burble' at idle?

I miss my LT1 engine Thoose have a nice "burble" to them, especially when the CC was hollowed out for a bit hehe,

Ever driven an M3? Sewing machine inline 6. Seen the many reviews of the new M5? It sounds like a diesel at startup. MB spent a million dollars tuning the exhaust sound of the SLR. The Porsche Carrera GT has "sound channels" and special baffled exhaust to try to make the v10 sound less like a v10.

An old boss of mine had an early 90's Jaguar. That thing was so quiet when she pulled up, the only thing you heard was the gravel on the road popping under the tires. I've never heard such a quiet car from the outside.

i'd say its a toss up between the ford windsor v8 and the slr for the best sound. if you see the jeremy clarkson special where he compares sounds from various cars, old and new, it's just heaven.

My 6.0 liter LS2 motor in my 2005 GTO sounds great, even completely stock. Eventually, it's going to get some JBA shorty headers and some kind of catback with an X-pipe.

I went back to the stock exhaust, sounded like crap with whatever tri-y headers my brother put on there (plus they were baking starter motors). Not as loud, but still sounds great.

More cylinders means lower rpm's. It lets you hear the firing order much clearer. The greater airflow and larger exhaust also lends to the distinctive sound.

Sounds mean . Is that the stock cam in there? What year is yours?

I still have the stock setup in mine. The sound clip I posted earlier is an '05 with FRPP's (made by Borla). I can't decide whether to get those or a set of Flowmasters.

'65, bone stock 289 except for the carb (Edelbrock Performer)

Crank design. A V8 with a 90 degree crank will have that cadence that you think of when you think of a V8. A V8 with a 180 degree (or "flat") crank (which is NOT the same as the angle between the cylinder banks) will sound like an inline 4.

Exhaust and cam play a significant role too, but the #1 influence on that classic V8 cadence is crank design.
