Why do V8s have that awesome 'burble' at idle?

The turbine whine from my 951 would tend to suggest otherwise. Nothing feels quite like a K26/8 coming on to full song at 3,000 RPM.

my german car also does things noiselessly. when you really gun it, it goes HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. its the sort of noise you expect from a microwave, really.

The 1800 flat four Subaru engine my dad has in his Ford Anglia 105E sounds awesome, especially with the two seperate exhaust systems, each from one pair of cylinders, you can hear it pulsing left-right-left-right-left etc - will try and get a video/sound clip of it over the weekend

I have a 94 GT with bassani unequals, bassni x-pipe with cats and borla XRs with a mild cam...its more of a mellow gurgle. I used to have an off road h-pipe with 2 chamber flows and I couldnt even hear the person next to me with the top down (which was good in some cases).

Agreed on all counts. When I had my POS Summit OR H-pipe in I couldn't hear the passenger talking while cruising. I switched out my BBK unequals with some FRPP stainless/jet-hot unequals, and my OR H for a Bassani X with no cats...

I'm still running Flowmaster 3 chambers for the time being, but I hope to switch them out for a Magnaflow cat back and complete my conversion to a all-stainless exhaust system...

I'll have a better vid tomorrow...you running stock or aftermarket heads?

More cylinders means lower rpm's. It lets you hear the firing order much clearer. The greater airflow and larger exhaust also lends to the distinctive sound.

You might want to tell that to BMW, the M5 has ten and they have no problem spinning like crazy...

Actually, that rough, lopy idle reminds me of a car with a racing cam..

thats exactly what it is.... bad ass cam and really good heads and intake and exhaust make it sound like that... rough like that .. means power....

my 347 Quarterhorse with TFS heads and a B303 Cam sounded like it barely idled... but it made 750 hp on dyno..

It is awesome, especially for a 289 - I prefer it over the whinny buzzsaws of the hi-revving 4's that a lot of fanbois splooge over. Cjgallen said it was stock except for the carb.

Ever driven an M3? Sewing machine inline 6. Seen the many reviews of the new M5? It sounds like a diesel at startup. MB spent a million dollars tuning the exhaust sound of the SLR. The Porsche Carrera GT has "sound channels" and special baffled exhaust to try to make the v10 sound less like a v10.

Audis are a waste of time and money.

this is a true statement if you have ever been to germany it would be clear to you. Im sure you have not been so it doesnt make sense. I would recommend observing noise in a munich subway station versus an American subway station. silence vs. cahotic screeching. This is just part of the meticulous and perfectionistic german culture.

The S500 MB makes is one of their larger V-8s. You cannot tell the car is on when you start it.

Of course if they engineer an engine to be loud its going to be loud. thats a given. In general though german machinery is silent because noise is seen as an imperfection in the design.

but you just wanted a reason to go off on a tirade about me anyways....so i hope you got off..
