Why do we bury people?

Seems like a waste to me. I plan to donate my organs to people who need them, and send the rest of my body to a university. I won't give a crap, I will be dead.

I mean, once you are dead, your body is of no use to you. So why go through the process of spending BIG $$$$ to preserve and view a dead body. That seems pretty grotesque to me.

You could still have a funeral, but make it with pictures or something. That is what a friend of mine did when her mom died. Her mom had some freaky form of cancer, so she sent her body to be experimented on. They had a memorial service, and they said their goodbyes that way.

So what is our infatuation with dead people?

Dunno...

When it comes time, I don't want to waste no precious earth space, I say toss me into the water and let the fishes at me... recycle my body...

Dead bodies have a bad habit of smelling really awful. A couple of feet of earth work wonders.

Or, where else would you put them all, the billions and billions who have lived and died? You can't burn everyone.

I think it depends quite a bit upon the climates in the areas where whatever x religion says to do with the dead. In hotter climates, dead bodies are to be burned within three days (I think) - I can't remember what religion this is. In mild climates, burial was usualy preferred, and since flesh takes longer to begin to rot in milder climate, the time allowed between death and burial is increased.

Well, what else can you do with a carcass beside burning and feeding to animals? It has lost its use, so we make sure it's out of sight (and smell). Same counts for nuclear and chemical waste

I believe it's the Tibetans that practice sky burial. They place the bodies high in the mountains on elivated platforms for the vultures who spread your remains all over the land. It seems so perfect.

Hinduism(India) supports burning.

i think we started burying bodies b4 we started experimenting on them. maybe were just slow in the switchover. time to talk to your local senator about a new-anti-burial-pro-donation bill?: )

I don't like the idea of a burial... I think it is a waste of space... I see cementaries that could be parks...

I feel that a better memorial for dead folks would be cremation and then a tree planted... Then you could see a living thing and think of the one you lost...

That is what I want...

myputer, you seem to have misunderstood, they are talking about after death here, not what you are thinking about right now.
