I'm going to guess that the people who don't tip (in the US) have never worked in the service industry when directly serving customers. %20 barely covers customer bullshit half the time.

true dat.

because I don't want him to water down my second drink

so why don't we tip at mcD's in fear of getting our burgers spat on?

I mean, water it down by putting less alcohol in it, something that's perfectly within the bartender's capabilities of doing when I go back for a second and third and fourth drink after not tipping for the first.

it's an unspoken arrangement... "hey, I'm a good tipper, make my drinks stronger."

at McD's the people who take your money aren't even the people actually making your food (and in fact, most probably never know anything about the customer beyond the "1 big mac" order that flashes on their screens in back)

And from my experience, hardly anyone gets 40 hours.

Better service, better drinks.... Why not?

And if you don't have the money to tip, you shouldn't be there in the fucking first place.

Because, for the time you're there, you want the service to keep coming promptly and without watered down drinks.

You want to make friends with the guy serving the booze, and nothing speaks like $$$ and proper tip etiquette.

I won't speak for bartenders - but try eating at restaurants in foreign countries where tipping is not normal - from everything I have personally seen, the level of service is far below that which you get in the states. I know I am not answering your question, but I overwhelmingly prefer a tipping system where waiters bust their rears than a system where waiters are apathetic to the needs of their tables.

I've worked in the service industry for many years and why would you give a tip to someone that's doing what's in their job description? They get paid minimum wage already. If they need a higher paying job they can go somewhere else.

seriously this, bartenders at a happening joint make a lot more than me and probably most of us especially since you factor in that most of it cash and doesn't get reported. Honestly how does $7 for a 1 cheap ass beer that costs me $1.50 ~ $2 when I buy it in a six pack not cover his wages.

I tip because it's the social norm and some of the girls in our group work in the service industry as waitresses etc so of course they always tip over the top like 20%+ and give $2 tips for 1 drink. If you don't tip a service worker while out with people who work in that field you'll be shunned. It's one of those things that's just is, I don't like it but it is what it is.

They should be paid a decent wage and I feel the overpriced beers are enough for the owners to carry that burden. BTW I'm actually a very good tipper. It's ingrained in the US society, go to vegas and see how out of hand it's gotten.
