I know I am not answering your question, but I overwhelmingly prefer a tipping system where waiters bust their rears than a system where waiters are apathetic to the needs of their tables.

I don't know about other countries but I'll tell you this. Waiters here in America sometimes take their sweet-ass time coming back. They often disappear for 10 minutes and you're left wondering where they are and have to look over your shoulder every 30 seconds just to catch them. In other systems like chinese restaurants here you can ask any of the waiters walking by to do your bidding. They may not do it with a smile or kiss your ass, but it gets done. I hate having to wait for my waiter to come back with a check, then disappear again while I look it over and give him the credit card... only to wait some more. :| Sometimes I feel like Americans like that superiority of being waited on (which in reality you're doing the waiting). I just want my damn food and drinks pronto. I couldn't care less if you call me sir or smile at me. They pool their tips at the end of the day anyway, which some American restaurants do too.

If it is a place you go to often you tip well if you want good service next time. Added bonus: If you drink liquor drinks there is a good chance the bartender may just keep that pour going for you a little longer as well depending on how much leeway the bar mgmt gives the bartenders.

If you just order bottles of beer, then I don't tip much at all. After all, they aren't doing anything except taking it out of the fridge and putting it on the counter.

For mixed drinks, then you can tip if you want them to go a little heavier on the alcohol and things liek that since they rae actually making the drink for you.

Bartenders (good ones) have quite a bit more knowledge/skill.

indeed....there's something about mixology and making a drink so it doesn't taste of alcohol but how it's supposed to.

ok, but they can water down your coke.

that's why you go to a mcdonalds that has one of those self-service machines.
dont go thru the drive thru.

not all food courts have self serv soft drinks.

ahh food courts.. unfortunately then.. sorry.

alot of times tho, Taco Bell in food courts will offer the self serve softdrinks..

look for one of them, and get the soda from taco bell

This is ridiculous anyway. No drive-through McDonalds worker is going to go out of their way to water down your drink unless you manage to convince them you're a huge asshole in the 30 seconds it took you to order your food. The worker isn't going to try to save the corporation money on soda and they're usually in a hurry to fill orders anyway.

And the self-serve fountain drink machine is identical in how it works. The only reason you might get watery soda in the drive-through and not at the self-serve is that you happen to show up when the syrup needs changed out or the CO2 is low at one place but not the other.

So yeah, completely different than at a bar where the bartender is most likely pressured by the owners / management to use as little alcohol as is feasible and where a tip might actually get you somewhere.

seriously this, bartenders at a happening joint make a lot more than me and probably most of us especially since you factor in that most of it cash and doesn't get reported. Honestly how does $7 for a 1 cheap ass beer that costs me $1.50 ~ $2 when I buy it in a six pack not cover his wages.

I tip because it's the social norm and some of the girls in our group work in the service industry as waitresses etc so of course they always tip over the top like 20%+ and give $2 tips for 1 drink. If you don't tip a service worker while out with people who work in that field you'll be shunned. It's one of those things that's just is, I don't like it but it is what it is.

They should be paid a decent wage and I feel the overpriced beers are enough for the owners to carry that burden. BTW I'm actually a very good tipper. It's ingrained in the US society, go to vegas and see how out of hand it's gotten.

yup, it's because everyone else is.
i'm not saying i don't tip, but just question why for such a effortless task that they are doing. especially if you're just getting beer.

The better question is, why do we buy beer at a bar? knowing that we can go to the Mobil station across the street and get a six pack for the price of one. I never got that.

Every time I drive to the city to go out, I break it down and ask myself. Why did a spend $10 in gas to drive to the bar. Then I pay a $5 cover to listen to music I don't like and buy over priced beer. Hmmmm

so why don't we tip at mcD's in fear of getting our burgers spat on?

Cuz it doesn't matter at McD's, you know they'll spit on your burger regardless. And if you're eating McD's food a little bit of spit is probably the least of your worries.

Effortless lol come work one of my shifts.

The main reason to tip is so they will deal with your drunk ass. Bartending is not a cake job, dealing with drunks sometimes sucks. I know I have bartended for the last 6 years. You don't have to go overboard but if you order some fancy ass drink or a round of shots etc take care of your bartender.

Perhaps the possibilities of socialising at the Mobil station are not as high. Then again, why talk to other people, it will only cause you to lose valuable time that could have been employed ordering and imbibing more beer?

I tended bar for 9 years or so. I tip my bartenders, well, for preferential service. If the bar is packed, there is nothing better than walking in the door, getting up to the bar between two people holding money, looking expectantly, and then they look at you with that "WTF?!?!?!" face when the bartender places MY cold beer/mixed drink/whatever in front of me - without my having to ask - and not even bother to wait for the money, while they are STILL on hold for another 5 minutes or so.......Then, at closing and last call, when the bouncers are all hollaring to "FINISH IT UP!" and "LET'S GO!!!" chasing the stragglers out, I sit chatting with the bartenders and owner and waitresses drinking my beer in peace.

You tip the bartenders, get to know them, and you'll never have a problem in the place. The owner will know you, the waitresses, the bouncers, and, more often than not, every 3rd or 4th drink will be on them or the house.

You take care of your bartender, he/she will take care of you.

why do we tip someone for pouring jd and coke into a glass?

yes, spawned off the other tip thread.

Mostly because by the end of the night, my JD + coke has become JD with a splash of coke.

Actually, you are tipping for better service, but your tip has to be bigger than the tippers around you.

just tip or stay home you fucking cheapskates

Though, I would like to rant at the price of beers out, the owners of bars and clubs need to stop gouging the prices so bad...

I'm not a regular anywhere (and I don't go out at the crowded times anyway), so I just give a standard $1/drink. Not worth going over the top since I'll probably never see them again, but I'm not going to cheap out since they have to earn a living.

So we can get free drinks the rest of the night. Tip a bartender well and you'll get drinks without paying for them.
