There are a lot of intangibles too that go into treating bar / waitstaff properly. I don't think many here see these things as they are more apt to be out waiting for the midnight sale of Halo IV than trying to get some chick into bed.

If all hell breaks loose around me the staff is more than likely not throwing me out. They are more likely to work the angles on a chick I am interested in and like others have said, I will always have a drink in my hand.

On top of that I will probably be comp'd on drinks that far exceed a generous tip anyway.

Properly I shouldn't serve more than one drink an hour to anyone, or something like that if you want to go by the books.

Silly thing about alcohol laws (at least in my state) you are not supposed to serve someone who is intoxicated, but by law you are after a beer and a half or one heavy mixer.

edit:grammar haha

So we can get free drinks the rest of the night. Tip a bartender well and you'll get drinks without paying for them.

or flirt with the guys on either side of you.

Heh, that's when I'll give a nod to the bartender and he'll get her a drink, no charge to me and then she'll see who's working who in this arrangement.

conjecture? or fact?

ive worked many food jobs. the people in the back are making over minimum wage. the cashier taking your money is making over minimum wage also. the only staff that doesnt is the wait staff that brings you the wrong drink, gives you the wrong plate and adds extra items to your bill. that is who you are tipping. the only other person that shares in tips is the bus staff.

that said, ill tip a bartender when im out drinking. it tends to keep your time waiting for a drink down. wrong or right, it happens. i still think its bullshit. i want to make customers wait for their programs if they dont tip.

The places that serve expensive drinks do so to limit clientele or to offset costs.

Out of any big city I have been too there have always been a few off the beaten path bars with $1-3 beers and cheap and great mixed drinks.

I am willing to pay for location and what goes with that at times and other times I just want to sit back and relax. The cheaper drink establishments are often more relaxing too.

I'm going to guess that the people who don't tip (in the US) have never worked in the service industry when directly serving customers. %20 barely covers customer bullshit half the time.

I've worked in the service industry for many years and why would you give a tip to someone that's doing what's in their job description? They get paid minimum wage already. If they need a higher paying job they can go somewhere else.

Because bartenders are doing more than just their job description. A bartender on a busy night is hustling and getting a lot done. The wage system for bartenders is set up based on tips, that is how they estimate their salaries and is part of the appeal of the job. The bottom line is that bartending is not a minimum wage job, and that's part of the reason people take the job. It would be entirely different if during the application process you were told you were only going to be making minimum wage. I'd like to know what you did in the service industry. I'm guessing those who are complaining about tipping have never bussed tables, tended bar, or waited tables for any appreciable amount of time.

No they are NOT doing more than their job description. Their job description is to work in a high paced environment and customer service and serve drinks and keep their area clean. They don't do anything that's not in their job description. Just because they have to hussle to keep up doesn't mean they are doing anything extra.

You clearly have absolutely no idea what being a bartender in a busy environment entails. This just shows your ignorance. Not to mention, if you want bartenders to follow the letter of their job descriptions then you aren't getting more than 1 drink per hour, and as soon as you get those rosy cheeks or glazed look in your eye ("visibly intoxicated") you will no longer be served. If THAT were the case, I could only imagine the amount of whine threads we'd see about being cut off at the bar or being kept on a slow pace. Also, you didn't mention what your service industry job has been - I know now that it's clearly not serving customers.

I find that if you are really drinking to forget and tip your bartender well between drinks, you get much better service and stronger drinks.
