Why do we tip for service?

This isn't a discussion about how much to tip.

We tip waitresses, bartenders and food delivery people money. If some service man comes to do an install or check / repairing something, we often offer food/drinks

Why do we tip only certain professions and not everyone? Why not tip the firefighter who just saved your house or your spouse?

I'm curious to know where the standard came from?

Tipping for service makes YOU the boss, and responsible for their income. That makes them answer to you, not to a superviser or some other disinterested third party.

The tipping system is what makes service so personal, and good waiters.

Banish the tipping system and restaraunt service will become as attentive as a Best Buy or mini mart employee.

The tipping system is GOOD.

Probably a holdover from olden days when we didnt have minmum wage. The rich folks saw fit to toss a little extra coin at service folks so they could survive.

People like firemen make their wages from taxes, so rich folks didnt feel like giving them extra.

More than a holdover. Even with California's elevated minimum wage, a minimum wage isn't a living wage for a family. Waiters at restaurants in other countries make much more than the waiters here. The difference is that in other countries tipping may not be the norm.

It's a suppliment to their income, and allows them to work just 1 job to get by.

Because of cheap restaurants that dont want to pay their servers and bussers more than $2.13 a hour and make them rely on tips. I doubt your repair man makes $2.13 a hour.

Such a compelling argument if any of it were true. If you are going to lie, then why not say "Because waiters get raped and robbed and beat everyday. And because waiters have no arms and herpes."

Utter nonsense.

I have explained why the tipping system remains for wait staff.

Compare the service in a no-tip service oriented field compared to the service in a tip oriented field and you'll find, on average, the service when tipping is MUCH better.

Who treats you better? Your local best buy employee, or waiter? Your local McDonalds employee, or the waiter at your fav full service restaurant?

With no tips, the server merely seeks to increase sales and impress their boss. With tipping as their main source of income, the server now does everything they can to please YOU, because YOU are responsible for their income.

As for "too cheap..." Ban tipping and the extra cost of their pay will merely be rolled into the cost of your meal, PLUS matching taxes. Ban tipping and meals will cost MORE for LESS service.

NM, i see where your coming from, you live in liberal California where they pay their servers the minimum wage in California which is $6.75 a hour. Just about everywhere else the minimum wage is $5.15 a hour and the tipped minimum wage is $2.13 a hour.

To be honest............wages would definitely be different if not for tipping in the restaurant industry............has very little to do with them getting minimum wage.

Ever notice when your party is too large & the gratuity is included in the bill???????

Suddenly it's not an option. (Those are the REAL wages).

And FWIW, if the waiter/waitress has gone the extra mile, I'll usually tip over the standard gratuity to reward someone for a good job.

Now................"Why do we bribe the cable guy".....................THAT'S a topic for discussion!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!

Sometimes it's technically impossible to tip somebody, like the phone supporter in India or the firefighter if you're in the ambulance or your wallet burnt to ashes I don't tip service personel everytime though. If I had to wait a long time or if I'm nearly broke, bad luck.*

However you can tip at unusual places or in unusual forms. For example when I worked in a hospital the relatives of a former patient donated us many self-made cakes. I once tipped somebody at a train ticket counter because I really was in a hurry for an international travel and thanks to her I reached my train in time. She was a bit surprised though, heh

But why does nobody tip the people at the cash desks? Because customers go to Walmart & Co. to save money in the first instance? Or because you can't be a good or bad cashier? (Mh I tend to disagree with the latter reason)

* Uuh I better add that in my country it's completely voluntary, although not uncommon, to tip in restaurants.

And if you dont like to tip then dont tip, there are people out there that never tip. If you have a problem with tipping then join them.

Most judges and police have tip jars out as well these days. It really does improve service for those with money.

Tipping is an old custom. You USED to tip the host/hostess/waiter/whatever when you first came into the restaurant to ensure that you got prompt service. It was basically a bribe. If you didn't, they'd basically just ignore you the entire time. It has since been bastardized.
