Why do white people love "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Don't Stop Believin"

Everytime one of these songs comes on, every white person starts to belt it out like they think they are an amazing singer. I mean, I used to partake in it but now it seems so passé. Even in big cities, I find this still holds true so it is not just a small town thing.

So, what is it with these fraternal songs? I am white btw.

music means different things to different people, mostly memories of different times I would say.

SHA is a classic southern jam and DSB is a cheesy as fuck epic 80s tune. It was kind of repurposed by the frat scene since apparently 80s throwback clothing is super popular among people who still want to look and dress and act the same even after becoming an adult.

don't stop believing was the final song on the soprano's, was it not? that boosted it's popularity amongst the frat daddy set.

"Don't stop believing" and "Sweet Home Alabama" generally appeal to different types of Whities.

You're stereotyping White folks with that statement.

You're compelled to stop singing along once you start using words like partake and passé.

Sounds to me like you're confusing white people with rednecks.

While most rednecks might like those songs, you'd be hard pressed to claim that most white people like them...or like them enough to start singing them just because they're on the radio. What self-respecting Yankee wants to be seen/heard singing "Sweet Home Alabama" anyway?

True. I don't get why people make fun of KFC, I mean after I'm finished with the bucket I have the Colonel's juices all over my chin and face and it is just so. damn. delicious.

Also, I will now go purchase watermelon today. Thank you for reminding me.

You have no idea how popular that song is above the Mason-Dixon line with suburban white kids. Most of them have no idea how inherently racist it is nor do they care.

Sweet Home Alabama - never heard this song before.

Don't Stop Believin - heard this one on Glee for the first time.

Don't worry, after one more generation these songs won't even be recognizable.

I live in White Massachusetts, though I am not White. Still, never heard them growing up.

I sincerely hope he's not, it might take two.

It's like when I was a kid, riding in my uncle's car and he'd listen to this 1950's doo-wop shit on the radio (it's my party i'll cry if i want to) that I hated. All those 'golden oldie' 1950s stations have became 60s and 70s type stations. You can't find 50's music on FM anywhere anymore.

The problem is now, the 90s generation's songs, that we heard in middle & high school will be 'classic rock' for the next 30 years. Ugh. The thought of potentially hearing Sheryl Crow or fucking Smashmouth on the radio for 30 years is enough to make me want to snuff it.

Go listen to Neil Young's "Southern Man" and then listen to Sweet Home Alabama and read the lyrics. It's not overtly racist but their message is clear.

Also, you're probably one of the most hateful people I've encountered here, it's kind of funny to hear comments like that from you.
