I just reinstalled it, patched to 1.004, and got a few mods in.

I'm going to play it all night.

I can't speak for the other two, but I thought FEAR was generic and boring. After playing the demo for the original, I haven't bothered with it since.

I agree completely

And that's exactly how I felt when I tried STALKER. Kirkus, why should I have to research online in order to understand in-game story elements? That's a failure on the part of the game, if anything. Storyline elements should be revealed while the story is being told, not after the fact.

Then again, I didn't care much for Oblivion's atmosphere, either. There were too many dungeons that just felt meaningless. Neato, another bandit lord... oh look, ogres took over this cave... whoopee. The gameplay was great, I enjoyed all of the quest paths, and the main storyline was awesome. So many of the optional parts of the game just felt like filler.

The funniest thing is that the modern Chernobyl area is actually full of beautiful flora and fauna. Obviously you don't want to live there, but nature somehow endures. That's not a complaint about the game.

Have you seen the children that are born horribly deformed in that area? Nature might endure, but the genetic lines of everything in the area are forever changed.

Here, I'll bold the part of my post that you missed...

Here, I'll bold the part of your post I was talking about

Children != flora and fauna. And besides, genetic lines are never "forever" changed (unless the radiation persists forever, which it doesn't)

What about Merriweather? ......... Badum bump.

Count me in for a vote for the best game of 2007. All the eagerly anticipated games like GOW, Timeshift, Crysis, or the early DX10's even (Lost Planet, COJ) all pale in comparison to the atmosphere of Stalker. You kind of appreciate it or you don't it sounds like. There are a fair amount of adult gamers out there. I don't know if anyone feels the same way I do, but you'd better get/keep my attention somehow - whether it be a new gimic like bullet time or portals or unreal graphics or AI, etc. (I'll just check the "I think I'm getting out of PC Gaming" threads to see who feels the same way). And while there wasn't always immediate action, it was the environment and the desolation, and the isolation from normal civilization that actually kept the game interesting IMO. It was kind of waiting to see what I was going to run into next that was fun. I haven't even touched any of the mods other than the float32 one.

it was on ABC world news last night ... an American researcher moved his family - including his children - to the town built near the reactor to house the refugees from the meltdown; i think they are building a new containment dome ... i only caught the end of it

In addition, following the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl in 1986, there is still a large piece of contaminated land which has not been fenced off. Vladimir Chuprov, who heads the energy section of Russian Greenpeace, told ABC News that a significant part of confiscated radioactive materials come from this area.

"Part of what is brought in comes from Chernobyl and the zone around Chernobyl," he said. "If there was no Chernobyl, there would be no problem with radioactive materials."

Pavel Felgenhauer, a Moscow-based military analyst, told ABC News that a blackmarket for radioactive materials does exist in Russia but that it is not very serious and does not pose any great risk.

"What happens quite often is that those involved sell the stuff to each other -- and often to the criminal underworld. This is radioactive material -- not nuclear, not enriched plutonium and nothing to do with nuclear weapons."

What the hell do i do? I finally got powerful sniper rifles and artifacts! I can't find a solution to this problem on any board either

What operating system are you using?

Have you installed the mod through the smart mod installer? Have you installed both 1.005 and gamedata files?

I agree,I think Stalker and the Witcher are my game of the year awards for 2007,Stalker was quite scarey in places and you definetly got your moneys worth with gamplay and playing time.

FPS/RPG elements were quite original as already stated.

I liked it because it required patience, I didn't enjoy it until about 10 hours in. Then I was hooked. I also liked how the game got better as it went on, as opposed to those ones that peak early or get repetetive. It clearly had faults, the biggest being how long it takes to travel everywhere. But it was definitely unique, and that gets praise just for effort.

Check out the "Zone Reclaimation Project" and the Smart Mod Manager tool which can be found here.

Yes it does. I have never tried it though.

I haven't either. Never even logged onto the multiplay thing cause I think of it primarily as SP. If they decide to forego it in Clearsky, I wouldn't mind.

Only on Anandtech do "gamers" celebrate when they find other people who hate a game as much as they do.

Stalker is not desigined around MP imho.

IIRC there is only FFA/Team death matches. Cycles through day and night in a single round (big difference between the two). You kill people to earn money to buy better guns and add ons, you can run out of money and end up with just s pistol.

Overall, it's a nice to play a few rounds just for a change from regular FPS's, you get the atmosphere of the game for the first few rounds, but when that wears off it's best to stop playing.

Oh, and i know for a fact that 2 threads have been made on this topic but i can't find them, so i'll ask here instead of making a new post.

What are some of the best mods for stalker? I'm not sure what is out there so i can't really say what i want, but more creepy and smarter AI's and new environments if that is available/good. I've already gone through the game once and would really like a new experience going through again.

I'm playing through STALKER when I have time, it's a fun game, not always the most exciting journey, but I can see where they were going with it, and enjoy it for that reason.

I'm playing through it now with the Oblivion Lost mod. I'm not really sure what the mod does entirely, as I had already played through a bit of the game without the mod and nothing seems different.

Game is very good. Very difficult at first as many have said (thank god for quicksave), but now I have the SEVA suit, and a AK-74 with a scope and things are getting easier.

I am at the Bar area now, and can't wait to continue my exploration of the Zone. Especially since the SEVA suit rocks against almost all forms of damage, so I don't have to freak out at every little thing I see out there.

Real quick, can anyone tell me what the best gun you can buy at the Bar area would be, or should I just stick with my scoped AK-74 and wait to pick up a better gun later? I have heard that the G37 is the best gun in the game, but unfortunately they dont sell that at the bar.

Also, what are the best artifacts to carry? Right now I have 3 of the +200% health ones and 1 of the +400% health ones on me, and it seems to make my HP go up pretty fast when I'm not in combat. I'm not sure if it does anything other than that, or if it is worth it to get that -30% or -40% to my Impact, Rupture, and Bulletproof Cap stats (although admittedly I don't know what any of those do either, yay).

Go do the arena fights near the bar and when you get to the last opponent grab his rifle and when you spawn in the real world you'll have the F2000 rifle.

I just did the 3rd arena fight there and it said I'm not experienced enough to do any more fights yet. Is it the 3rd fight you get the gun from or is it a later one that i'll have to come back for?
