Why do you live here then?

So I met this Russian guy at the mall yesterday, and I started talking to him. He came to Canada when he was around 4 or so, and he said he has lived here for more than half of his life. So I started to talk about his experiences here and this guy just started railing on things.

Almost every sentence he spew was negative towards Edmonton and Canada, and I thought to my self, "Why does this guy live here?". I know that as an immigrant, you're probably always going to have that special connection with your mother land, but why do you have to hate so much on the country that has given you a chance? It's pretty obvious that your parent saw something here that urged them to come.

Weak rant, I know, but these type of people really turn my mood bitter.

They piss me off as well. It is a free world of the most part. Go live somewhere YOU want to live and enjoy it. Dont move to a country and then diss it or try to change it.

It is pretty lame. If you hate it so much, then leave. But come to America where we are undergoing an invasion from our south who's sole purposes is to replace american culture and values with mexican. That kind of goes against other people I've met who have immigrated here legally who love the opportunity they are given.

Good work buddy is a Canadian who has been trying desperately for years to become an American citizen and has been working here for 5+ years. He loves this country.

My dad immigrated to Canada and subsequently the US from China over twenty years ago. Even though he loves the new opportunities North America has to offer compared to the situation in China back then, he despises the inherent racism of Quebecois Canadians towards asians and the prejudice that some Americans share as well. Not exactly a perfect comparison but maybe a plausible explanation at least. Check out Paul Kivel's Culture of Power journal.

I have one answer for those kinds of people.
You will find whatever you look for. Look for racists and hatred, you'll find it everywhere. Look for enlightened individuals and intelligent discourse and you will find that too. It is your choice.

However it's also in their right to say what they want about the system they're in. That said, I tend to lean towards the "if you don't like it, get the fuck out" mind set most of the time. People rarely understand how good they have it compared to other places, and I'd love to see them leave and then come crawling back once they see that the rest of the world isn't perfect either.

If there was utopia on Earth I would be the first person to move there, but you take what you can get. I think I live in a great city/country yet it still has its problems and I'm not afraid of somebody putting voice to that.
