I realize that this is a subjective opinion, but you really need to travel some.

i have been to at least half of the states - so far i liked visiting most of them, but would not prefer living in any of them

visited colorado for a week this past summer - awesome scenery but housing was too expensive, traffic was butt awful, plus there was all that weed crap. traveling there once every few years is fine with me.

Born, raised and will die here (30K peeps) unless I win mega millions (I don't play). I live about 200 yards, as the crow flies, from the old hospital I was born in. 1.3 miles form the office. House is paid for. All of the fam is local except for the sis in Mexico Beach.

Exact same for the wife, but her sis is in NY, and she'll get some $$ when I drop dead and own a loan company. She's a licensed counselor and doesn't need my $$ anyway.

Pros: None. Stay the eff away.

Cons: 10 years ago, we were the #1 retirement community in the South. Eff...blue hairs...old people...get off my lawn.

Edit: Everyone knows your shit. With the both of of having a "public" presence (her more so than me),...it's better that I don't visit bars alone.:|

Do people automatically assume things about you when you tell them where you are from? Rude, Exterous, Zin, Burn and Mixolydian love people form S.C.

Love them long time.

:sneaky:

Is Rude off vaca yet? I thought I saw a new sig ...

Maybe you're just boring. Like most other Ohioans.

I'm not trying to sell anyone on Colorado (it sucks here...please don't come) nor am I trying to put down Ohio...but to call Ohio "the best state" is a bit of a stretch. There are other states with low cost of living, little traffic, much better weather and more beautiful scenery.

I'm in North GA, about an hour north of Atlanta:

Grew up there? No, moved to Atlanta after college about 25 years ago

Work? Family? Originally for work, now I'm married with 3 kids. My wife has 3 siblings fairly close by. I could find a job just about anywhere but I am content here.

Is where you live where you plan to retire/die? Probably

What are some pros and cons of where you live? It's a small community, town of about 3500. Pros: I live on the lake with a 3000sf house and 5 acres, very rarely see traffic, very private. Cons: it's a 20 minute drive to just about anything commercial.

Do people automatically assume things about you when you tell them where you are from? Don't know, don't care.

well nobody has convinced me of the contrary yet :whiste:

i might eventually be convinced to move a few states south of ohio (like TN), but i have long standing confederate trust issues

and i havent visited hawaii yet - that should happen this year though

CT here. Moved here in HS with family. Too poor to move out now :awe:
--CUT--
Cons:
No good fast-food restaurants (they just barely built our first Chik-fil-a)
People are generally pretty cold here (closed-off), not nearly as open as people in the south

You must not live near a Duchess. That's a shame. Good stuff!

Closed off? Do you mean as apposed to the MANY southerners that have bumper stickers that say "we don't care how you do it up north" or "go back up north"?

I'm in CT as well. Born, raised spent all but 5 years of my life here so far. Family/friends/familiarity/etc keeps me here. Lived "down south" for 5 years. Too hot, too many bugs, too much hatred for the north - though they have GREAT roads down there and I love concrete block construction homes. Wasn't enough, had to come back.

As already hit by Kaido.. It's EXPENSIVE here. Pay in a LOT and yet many public things (roads, etc) are in horrible condition.

Born here, it used to be a very nice area before 3 million people left NY, NJ, and PA to suck on the Federal teat descended on the area.

House will be up for sale the same day I retire.

Northern NJ:

Grew up there? No.

Work? Family? I got a nice gig here, also wife too. She grew up here.

Is where you live where you plan to retire/die? I hope to god no. I came down when I was sick of Boston, I wanted to go westcoast, but just ended up here due to my noob gf who's now my wife.

What are some pros and cons of where you live?

Pros: Amazing korean food. Good jap food too. And thanks to NYC, good food overall for most cuisine.

Cons: it's fvcking NJ. Same crappy weather as New England, but it's NJ. Some truly ugly towns here. WTF they suck at Pho, how does this happen? I'm talking about the entire Tri-state.

moved into my current apartment to help take care of my great aunt (it's a duplex... she owns the house and lives in one unit; I rent the other at a below-market rate in exchange for taking her shopping, helping with the house upkeep, etc).

unfortunately, her dementia is getting worse and she's taken to waking us up in the middle of the night on a regular basis for non-emergency issues (think, pounding on the door and ringing the doorbell for an hour nonstop at 3 am on a weekday night to let us know that it's garbage night)... she's refused to admit that she either need to go into a nursing home or get some live-in help, so unfortunately, we've got no real choice but to abandon her and move out in the near future. I feel bad, but I can't live on constantly sleep deprivation because of her.

likely going to move down to Central Jersey, to my boyfriend's old town (where he'd lived for 3 years before he moved into my apartment). nice downtown, bars where the staff knows us, and close to most of our friends.

Nope, Hartford, although I've got family dotted in a few areas around here, so I'll have to check it out! Also, I grew up in Florida, so I know what you mean. We got a lot of slow-driving snowbirds from Connecticut, which, aside from the extra "tourism" income for half the year, was somewhat annoying to the local residents. So I understand that. But I could pretty much talk to anyone anywhere & it was a lot more relaxed, especially around the beach area, whereas here in CT people think you're creepy & weird for striking up a conversation

Too many reasons to leave Florida tho: snakes, fire ants, mosquitos, alligators, hurricanes, flooding, mandatory evacuations, no basement due to the waterline, and on & on & on. I do miss the cheap housing & the beaches, but that's about it. No real desire to even ever visit again haha. You're right tho, they do have great roads with really nice merges, unlike here where your on-ramp is 2 feet long & you have to do 80 to merge

We did a stint as caretakers for maybe 6 months; it's exhausting for sure! The sleep deprivation was the worst. We finally canned it & they got professional live-in help, which was good all around. The random things like putting the thermostat up to 90F, dealing with the attitude, etc...I'm really glad there are people are are good at & enjoy that type of job, because it was totally draining for me!

Yeah, there are only like 2 good Pho places here, but they're lifesavers in the cold snowy weather

yup... I feel bad since my rent money is basically her primary source of income other than social security and I don't see how she can re-rent it out after we leave (no other tenants would put up with the amount of shit we've put up with; I'm getting shit from family members over abandoning her, but I'd love to know how they'd react if I drove to their house and started ringing their doorbell in the middle of the night non-stop for an hour and threatening to call the cops when they don't open the door).

but, we've got to think about ourselves. it's not really fair to us either to expect us to live in these conditions... I'd happily stay here and pay even more rent to help her pay for a nursing home or live-in help, but she's refused all offers. since she has no physical health problems, we'd have to get her declared incompetent in court to force her into a home.

it's sad when the best thing for her would be to accidentally fall, break a bone, and be forced to stay in a hospital for awhile.

My parents tell stories of when 28 was just a single lane dirt road.
They used to drive from Philadelphia to Fredericksburg and see my god parents.
That was 1980 if I'm not mistaken.
