Why does after an Active Directory install, the reboot to "Preparing Network Connections" take forever (10-20 minutes) ?

In the comp lab, we often install, delete, and reinstall OSes all the time. What I find is that after you've installed AD, the reboot process takes very long time to get to the "Control-Alt-Delete" screen. Its stuck in "Preparing Network Connections" sometimes up to 20 minutes, 10-15 minutes being average. Its longer if its the first DC setup too.

Any idea why fellas? Thx in advance.

Not absolutely sure on this but from what I understand Active Directory is building itself a list of devices out there. If you have more than one Active Directory server out there (which is entirely possible in a classroom) they will all be talking to each other exchanging information. If you want the process to go quicker just unplug your patch cable from your NIC. It still will take a little time, but should be noticibly quicker.

i believe that is a known bug that was suppost to be fixed with SP2

What the DC is trying to do is update it's own DNS records within DNS. After installing AD for the first time, it usually takes awhile for it to come online. After that, it shouldn't take that long.

Also, what SP level is the OS at when you install AD? I will check the KB articles for any known issues with this.

By any chance, is the Server a Dell PowerEdge 1400/2400 series server?

Never ever took that long time for me if everything was set up correctly. I think you have some DNS problem. Make sure that the NIC points to itself in DNS properties and that it registers itself in DNS.
