Why does everyone think they need their own local printer?

It use to be that everyone including managers printed to a network printer. I guess the company started making way too much money so decided to waste it on giving all managers their own inkjet printers. Well ok, that's reasonable since they're managers but now it's getting ridiculous. Suddenly managers think their assistants need their own printer too. Not only that but just because someone is assigned a special project they'll be needing their own printer as well. WTF, that person sits 5 feet away from the network printer. We blow through 300-400 dollars worth of ink cartridges a month just because everyone "needs" a local printer. It doesn't help that my boss (IT director) gives in to all their hardware demands either.

That is, indeed, a weak rant. Stew about it some more and update it so I can grade it properly.

But basically, people are stupid.

Because your power in the organization is directly tied to what kind of printer you have on your desk. If your assistant has a big/nice color/laser/fax machine you are da man dog!

I'd rather NOT have a printer on my desk at work. The color laser is faster and plenty sharp...and doesn't take up precious desk space.

Why blow all that money on ink jets? Give everyone a personal laser and have one nice inkjet/color laser for the very rare prints that actually need color. You'd save a bundle AND everyone can have their own printer.

I'm betting that in his organization, people print lots of things in color that have no real need to be in color.

Exactly. That is why you give everyone a laser, so they don't blow that money on useless color. Yes, dear Aunt Sally sent you an email in all purple fonts. It doesn't mean you have to print that email in color wasting the blue and red ink.

This is true!

I impress the women with this.

?This Mitsubishi DiamondStar 90 printing press is apparently the biggest printing system in the world ,and can print out 90,000 complete full colour broadsheet newspapers an hour. The Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper of Japan has four of them linked together that can produce 100 newspapers a second.?

I also like to fire it up in-front of save the forests protests.

The main reason is because they could possibly be printing sensitive information. I know at my old job, my boss sent something to the wrong printer and we all got to see how much of a promotion someone was getting including new salary. That kind of stuff is confidential and should not be printed to a shared printer.

Although my desk space is not particularly precious (I would probably have to move my army of Star Wars Mr. Potato Heads to my bookshelf). And my office is across the hall from the printer room, so I don't have to walk too far

That's what secure/private print is for

A true enterprise printer has a feature to hold the document in the que until the user meanders over to the printer and types in a password to print it out.

Why should you care? Are they taking that $3-400 out of your pay?
Sure it's wasteful, but if you're not in charge of it, just leave it be.

It had gotten to that point at my last job as well. A little before I left they bought two Canon copy machines that do just about everything (for two different buildings now combined into one), and the owners have since mandated everyone use those and had my former boss retire the superflous printers. They were concerned about the high price of ink and toner for all the separate units not to mention they are just cheap in general concerning everything!

I've been at my current job for almost 5 years and I've never had my own printer. Our network laser and color laser printers are just fine.

sounds like my company...and my fucking boss, the CIO, allows it and has no problems with it. I seriously don't get it. Yeah, some people need to print in color so a B&W networked laser won't work but we could put in a networked inkjet for those times!

i see so much wasted money at my company (and we're being really tight on money lately, like not giving raises to anyone (although some people did :|)) but here we are wasting money on ink.

Same with UPS units. When a battery dies, we just order a whole new unit. Unless we are getting some big discount on them, they cost like $75. The batteries cost $30 i think.

but my boss doesn't want to listen to anything i say because he knows everything...fucking douchebag...

Track the costs of the ink cartridges, and the printers, and start charging it to the departments individual budgets, NOT IT's budget. Very quickly they'll cut it back.

this is the best approach from my view, it's always easy to spend other people's money!

It might be because when you need something, you need it right then. You don't want to have to get up and possibly wait for five other things to print before you get yours. Just a thought.

You guys aren't listening.

It all has to do with politics and castle building and "I'm more important than you. See, I've got a printer."
