Why does memory usage for FireFox go up so much?

I am willing to bet if you let it go longer, the memory usage would have been higher.

So far no. A little bit more memory usage but I been using the browser and have a few more tabs open as well. It was bound to have it go up if I keep more tabs open and start using the browser loading pages. Seen that happen in all browsers.

eh just live with it, i've tried chrome and it bloats up with many tabs as well.
using firefox and 68 tabs, 1 day 494mb so far, it will bloat up to 800+ eventually. i carry over the same session from long ago so tabs build up, and doesn't really matter these days with so much ram avaliable. i use bar tab extension which in theory only loads the tabs you click on or the ones around them, so most the tabs probably aren't loaded, but these days it is a bit broken and just seems like a progressive loader, speeds up startup but it looks like all the tabs are loaded.. no script helps as well.

I love when people on anandtech thinks there more important than everyone else don't you ? They keep doing it over and over again too. I will be watching it very closely as time goes on.

111 TABS!? That's just for testing purposes I'm guessing? How the hell do you get that many otherwise? Even at work where I'm constantly opening new tabs/windows to show customers stuff I rarely get over 30 or 40.

I open up as many as 30 or so tabs at one time in order to enter sweepstakes each day. Depending on the content that could approach 1GB of RAM. I recently added a couple of plug-ins to block ads and especially flash content. That has helped reduce the amount of memory being used by a good bit. My problem with FF isn't with memory usage, it's that it sometimes starts continuously using 50% of my CPU, which slows my computer down to a crawl. I can usually shut it down in task manager and restart and it will be fine.

How much have you won? I've been meaning to mass enter online contests for some time but I'm too lazy. I know Geek Babe here does tones of that and has won lots of stuff too. Do you use something like roboform or a similar plugin to streamline form entry? And I'm assuming you use a dedicated "junk/sweepstakes" email for this purpose?

Since I went to 8GB of RAM and a quad core processor I could give a shit how much resources my browser uses. Hell, not uncommon for me to have IE, Chrome and Firefox open at the same time most of the time either.

what's the point of posting memory usage if there's no reference to addons. Some addon's eat up memory.

FF has been doing this for years for me. Nothing new. The software leaks memory big time. Have to EXIT FF 100% then re-open.

I finally stopped using FF. It was getting really annoying when it would get super sluggish and unresponsive for a bit. I figured I would give chrome another try since I didn't have anything against it when it first came out.

Been using Chrome now for a week and I like it more I think. When a tab crashes only the tab closes, haven't had any sluggishness and I like the pin tab feature since I always keep a bunch of the same sites open all the time.

I don't give a crap about memory usage, I have a ton of ram, I just want the browser to all of sudden take 30+ secs to execute something or just hang up after awhile.

I don't care how much memory Firefox uses, but I leave it open until it starts responding sluggishly (e.g. a second between hitting PgUp and the actual scrolling), which usually happens within 4 or so days.

Currently, I have 13 FF windows with between 2-10 tabs in each, and for me, this is close to my normal use. Windows reports that this uses about 750 MB of memory, and between 5-7% of a quad-code processor.

I can handle restarting FF once or twice a week, but it does mildly annoy me and I, too, would like to find a way to avoid it. I have tried to find a web page that causes the constant memory increase, but no site seems to magically fix the issues when I close it. I have also tried to isolate an extension/plugin, but also to no avail.
