Why does my computer suck????

Ok this is what I have

MSI K8N Neo 4 Mobo
AMD Athlong 64 3000+
Leadtech Geforce 6600 256mb video card
1GB Crucial DDR400 ram
Maxtor 200GB SATA HD
LiteOn DVD Burner

I load up Far Cry for the first time today and it defaults to all the lowest settings except resolution. I get about 1 minute into the game and it crashes. Nothing works.

So I reboot and use the next resolution level down. It plays fine for a while....looks like crap but plays..then a slight hiccup....continues playing....then FREEZE. Can't do anything again. Reboot and post here.

So what did I do wrong? Do I need a better processor? Better video card?

I am very annoyed right now. Thanks for the help.

it seems like your having heat issues....... what are you using for the CPU and Video card heatsink?

I am using the OEM CPU heat sink and fan as well as the OEM heat sink and fan for the video card

Did you install the latest patch for Far Cry? Also, are you in Windows x64 or just regular Windows XP?

Definitely update drivers and game. Is it happening in other games?

Yeah it has done it with other games too. I got a copy of Bet On Soldier with my Mobo and that froze as well.

Actually the computer just froze as I was replying to this thread. I went to move the reply window and it locked up. What the heck is going on here????

I updated the drivers from Nvidia. They just released a new one 5 days ago. What is the patch for Far Cry for? Do I get it from the Ubisoft site?

I am running regular 32bit windows XP

You did install the forceware platform drivers when doing the install, and before the forceware vid drivers correct? Also, make certain that the vid card cooler is seated well on the GPU or the crashes will likely continue if it is not.

um whats your power supply? may be thats the poblem also ram and what timing is it running at? are you overclocking?

Newb alert....I don't know what this means. I just installed the drivers that came on the discs from the company.

I am using an Antec TruePower 430watt.

I am not overclocking.

The RAM is DDR400. I purchased it on Mwave as part of a mobo, CPU bundle so I think that it might be value RAM. I don't know if that matters or not.

Check your RAM for stable settings with Memtest86, particularly Memtest86 Test #8.

Random lock-ups and/or reboots are often caused by RAM page-faults.

Ok I did some searching on the Nvidia site. I saw the driver for nForce4 AMD platform but I don't know that I have them installed on the computer. Would I have to uninstall my video card drivers and install the platform driver first?

I downloaded a driver last night from Leadtek (video card maker) and it made me uninstall the Nvidia stuff. I wasn't sure why but I went through with it and then reinstalled the Nvidia drivers.

I haven't tried the game yet as it was getting late and now I am at work but could what is quoted above be what I did?

I will do that when I get home. What should I be looking for in the test results?

In that order.

(Assuming you have WinXP 32bit)

I'd uninstall the video card driver, then install the first link drivers (system driver) and then the video driver (2nd link).
