Why does Ryzen 7 1800X performs so poorly in games?

I was expecting it to be able to keep up with the Intel Core i7-6900K.

This was covered in the main thread linked to.
Locking this.

You make it seem like Ryzen is providing 50% of i7's fps in games? Are you serious? If by poorly you mean that un-optimized platform around Ryzen is 10-15% slower vs i7s (depending on a review) then yes. It is. So what? You people are amazing.

Its only temporary... it comes down to Microsoft windows code that needs to be updated and motherboard bios that needs to be fix and updated as well. give it a week or so and it'll all get fixed and most the bugs will get hammered out. Its perfectly fine to buy now if that is what you are wanting for an upgrade.its funny how no body is mentioning how Ryzen is matching and most of the time killing the 6900k in Linux.

short answer is windows is not correctly handling the threads between CCX's

I agree and I also personally believe the fact that a $500 CPU hangs pretty dang well with a CPU that is $1k+ is pretty impressive.

It will improve with the many needed updates a new platform needs. as there are always 'growing pains' with new launches.

The problem is that I heard this same excuse after Bulldozer was released.

Bulldozer was an unsalvageable disaster that bombed on everything but 7zip benchmarks. Optimization wouldn't have done anything for it. The modular architecture was just too weird and weak.

Ryzen performs perfectly well where it has to, it's single threaded performance is right where it should be and it's a multithreaded monster. What you're seeing is edge cases that don't bode well with these crappy launch conditions. This is a classic big strong core with SMT, just like Intel's.

Give it time. Ryzen as is, is an unpolished diamond.

It's a lovely mess but to sum it up...

Some reviewers didn't use fresh Windows 10 builds, but threw an Intel install into the AM4 test rig and let it go from there which BROKE Boosting,.

They also didn't set Windows 10 to Performance Mode which causes some p-state issues in balanced mode (should be fixed in later Win10 patches). Also there appear to be issues with high precision event timers.

Then there is the issue of there being non-public beta BIOSes that I guess many reviewers didn't use which might be the cause of these Memory issues and most reviewers just giving up and running the benchmarks in gimped settings.

And of course the gaming benchmarks being run at Console resolutions, isn't this high end desktop PC Master Race stuff? Who is going to run this kind of hardware at 1080p?

Ryzen seems to be doing well in everything else except games so I think they have to be specific issues that affect games.

That is not the point though. It loses even worse to a 350.00 7700k.

Pretty clear the intentions of this one...

Maybe it does in games. I'm not selling my system and jumping over to Ryzen. I personally never expected Ryzen to beat its Intel counterpart. I figured it would be competitive again. In a few weeks after they release some updates/fixes for some of the issues, I'll revisit it's performance and decide if it's worth recommending AMD again for builds in general hardware/computer help sub-forums.

It's not the first time a CPU with more cores lost to a quad core CPU in gaming benchmarks (e.g 6700k and 7700k).

This is the only review I've seen so far which extensively tests the memory latency issues. See the chart and how the latency jumps when data size increases over 4 MB.

They also say that bandwidth between two CCX units is only 22 GB/s, and that moving threads from one CCX to another is very costly in terms of performance. The second issue sounds like it could be fixed by smarter Windows thread scheduling, but I don't know enough about that to claim that it would help.

What are you trying to imply? Hm?

I had the Ryzen 7 1700X on pre-ordered and just cancelled it.

Would order again as soon as I know the issues are fixable.

Well, in the "official" Ryzen benchmark thread, they discuss concerns like this, and their thoughts on it. Creating a separate thread with the title you gave it raises some eyebrows.

There's plenty to discuss and debate with the new release no doubt, but user .vodka linked to something you didn't even address. In fact, your first reply after that link was:

The problem is that I heard this same excuse after Bulldozer was released.

That's a pretty crappy title.. The 1800X doesn't perform poorly at all.

I am not sure why so many people get so defensive when talking about AMD.

That thread is huge.

The issue is significant enough to warrant its own thread.

My question is if Ryzen's SMT will ever be an asset to gaming, or will we need to always leave it off?
