I'm not too happy with it at all for that matter.
Used to have a Santa Cruz, no difference there either.

Been thinking about a Revolution 7.1.

I have to rant (negative rant) about Windows Media Player 10. Like a fool, I downloaded ver 10 and installed it. That act prevented my Roxio from burning any type of CD. So, I foolishly said, I will uninstall WMP 10, following the uninstall directions on the website. And, bingo, no WMP any longer of any kind. No problem, I will just install WMP 9...wrong. Unable to install either 9 or 10. OK, I figure that I am smarter than this Media Player, so I go to System Restore checkpoint and try to restore to a pre-10 date/time...wrong. Unable to System Restore to that date time. A Win XP - Repair might do the job; but that would take 2 hours including the SP2 install. Besides I have no guarantee that an XP repair would work. So, I have selected RealAudio as my media player. I am still unable to burn audio or data, however. Maybe on to NERO next. I hate WMP 10.

I think your choice of handle is giving you bad luck!

sparkyclarky,

"Deskstar" does recall the dark days of the IBM drives that so often failed, and that gloom and doom, as you said, hangs around my neck (aka my handle).

However, just like IBM, I did not give up. IBM just sold their division to Hitachi, I think. I cannot sell my machine. So, after 2 hours of searching different forums/google/etc and trying several registry changes. I finally found a "fix". the "wmploc.dll" file was needed in the System32 folder. Just a copy and paste allowed me to reinstall WMP10. That sound you hear is my relief that I would not have to reinstall (or even "repair") XP.

All is now well in the Universe of Deskstar...could be a good movie screen play?

Thank you,
Deskstar (it's my handle and I'm sticking to it).

Now THAT'S hot. Last time I tried Foobar was 2001, I think. There was a slight difference in sound quality, but not enough to warrant its awful interface. Is that SS taken of a highly configured Foobar or do we all get that slickness right out of the box? I use Explorer to organize my music (it does a pretty good job, actually, even with 70+ gigs) but that's a pretty neat UI.

That is deffinitely not what it looks like out of the box. Even so, that screenshot is only nice if you like a music player to take up your whole screen. Most people consider foobar ugly because it doesn't have a window shade mode or a nice compact mode. it looks like a stinking explorer window.

But seriously, other players need to work on getting a user-friendly and simple music library. Winamp has been around forever and there still isn't an easy way to select music by artist, album, genre on the fly. ITunes must've spent more time thinking about what users actually want to see and I really think they got it right with the music library.

I just hit "J" and type the name of an artist/song, works well enough for me. I'm not concerned with genre or album really. There may be plugins to enhance this.

ya... this is the main reason i still use Winamp over every other player out there (with MilkDrop's fullscreen visual goodness being a quick Ctrl+Shift+K away).

i've actually started using WMP in the past week as i've been ripping my entire cd collection to lossless (WMA) compression. WMP is very good for this specific task and the difference in sound quality compared with a good VBR MP3 is amazing...

Deskstar, thanks for inadvertantly answering a lingering question I've had about why my Roxio software turned to crap. I had no idea Windows Media Player 10 was such a steaming pile of horsesh1t, until now... At least I know where to vent my frustrations from this point forward.

As far as iTunes, I had it installed on my old lappy but couldn't bring myself to infect The Behemoth with its vileness, so on the lappy it stayed, which is fine considering the majority of the music I listen to is on the lappy anyway and fed through the trusty ole router to this machine, which is proudly running Winamp 5.08 and loving it. Maybe its the fact I've been using Winamp since the 0.xx days, but I love it, and I've always loved it, although I did have a short one year affair with Sonique, which is now owned by the asshole of the Internet more commonly referred to as Lycos, and I must admit it was a fun fling... Sonique was so sexy with her animated menus (in a time when animated menus were not very predominant), ability to completely customize the animation, fairly easy-to-use interface, and some of the absolutely amazing skins that were/have/are being produced for the program, however, like any solid relationship based on love, I soon found myself drifting back to the familiarity and comfort of lovable, trusty Winamp and remain faithful to this day.

Another vote for J.River Media Center. I used Winamp for years, took a short romp w/ Foobar, then found jrMC. The library/tagging/resampling features alone do it for me. Ratings, smart playlists, etc etc are all there as well. It's a bit daunting at first because of all the features, but once you get the hang of it, you can customize it to suite your style.
