Why does Windows XP do this?

Whenever it boots I see a little X over Norton Antivirus and I basically have to wait like 20-30 seconds and then it scans the floppy drive the x goes away and I can finally use windows. All this time the hard drive isnt doing a thing. I've seen this on some computer but on some not.

Anyone have a clue?

I think it's just not done booting yet, loading up all the different programs and processes at startup and such. NAV hasn't finished loading, so it has the X over it.

Why are there so many messages that pop up in the taskbar and also that stupid Windows Messenger - Not signed in won't go away either.

you can start messenger, and go to the preferences. there you can select the option of making it NOT start with Windows.

No this is not the case.

Like I said, the computer kind of freezes for 30 seconds I cannot start any programs but I can double click on them and they will start as soon as the computer finishes scanning the floppy drive for something.

The computer is not doing anything.

Anyone else have this?

the only stuff that I have in the taskbar when I boot up is: the clock, Norton AntiVirus, Volume Control, CoolMon, and the Network connection status icon. Really, the only thing that you really need to have in there is the clock. Everything else that's there is because you put it there by installing some programs (ie. QuickTime or Winamp) where somewhere in the program's preference you can choose whether or not you want it started along with Windows.

Yes, this is correct.

Oh, also, there is a little-known Windows XP bug that not many know about. I'll let you in on a little secret:

The REAL reason WINXP exhibits the behavior you're describing, happens because:

YOU POSTED THIS IN THE WRONG FORUM, THAT'S WHY!! JIC you didn't know, there's an OPERATING SYSTEMS Forum.

or better yet, you can uninstall messenger by typing this into RUN

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Ok deleting that messenger thing did the trick to stop the freezing. But NAV still starts with an X for like 30 seconds and then it scans the floppy eventhough I shut off scan drive when mounted in the advanced section of autoprotect.

Any ideas?

I had the same problem. Turned that shyt off. It didn't even always work. Gee, with nimda nowadays (and other viruses), why would i care to be *alerted* to a fricken virus? If it's there it's there, NAV can't do a damned thing to it. If i need NAV, i just manually tell it to scan something.
