Why doesn't my motherboard POST when my USB printer is plugged in? (Asus P5B Deluxe)

My printer is an HP D5160 printer and is connected (via USB) to my Asus P5B-Deluxe motherboard.

Whenever the printer is plugged in, the motherboard will not POST.

It hangs at "Initializing USB Controllers.."

However, if I unplug the printer the system will POST just fine. I can then plug in my printer and it works perfectly fine under XP and Vista.

What the heck is going on? I've updated my BIOS to the latest version and am completely out of ideas...

Same here, with a P5W DH motherboard. It's somewhat annoying, though of course easily worked around, like you mentioned.

Another issue is that if I keep anything plugged into the bottom two USB ports in the back panel, the computer powers up within 5 seconds after I shut down through windows. I know it has something to do with remote startup, but does anyone know how to get around this as well?

I think I am having the same problem.
During the POST my USB initializes, but when it goes to detect the USB devices it hangs.
I guess it is something related to the BIOS.
Which version were you using before the latest?
I noticed that I started to have this issue after updating to 1223.

Have you tried to change settings in the BIOS related to USB? Any luck?

BTW, I am using also a P5B Deluxe Wi-Fi. And it just POST from cold boot. After powering down everything, my UPS. Just if I do this procedure it will start. Does it happen to you too?

Just an update.
I tested the USB ports, and I found out that it my Dell Monitor USB hub that do not initialize correctly.
So it hangs during the POST.
So I am having the same problem that you are having sofakng.

Thanks for the heads up, and I think all we can do is wait for the next BIOS release.

Does this printer have a built in card reader?

Go into your BIOS and disable booting via other devices or USB devices. If you can't disable those, move your hard drive before them in the boot order.

Correct. I had this problem and disabling the booting via other devices in the bios fixed it.

all ipod nano's do the same... since it happens to multiple devices across multiple motherboards using different chipsets only one conclusion comes to mind. A flaw in USB specification and motherboard handling of it causes certain devices to interrupt to boot process.
From my experience unplugging the offending device will cause the boot process to immidiately resume. (no need for restart)
