My mother was Armenian, I was raised on rice pilaf.

One of the few dishes that the kids say I do better than their mother.

i will partially agree with white rice not being very nutritious. but it doesnt matter if you go with asian cuisine since rice is only like bread; do you ever eat bread by itself and nothing else? probably not very often if ever. asian kitchen is built around rice, but rice is only a staple, not a dish - you get the idea. besides you can add beans and barley in the rice cooker which turns your rice into an excellent source of fiber and riboflavine and much more. dirt cheap too, way better than other healthy wannabe meals.

crappiest rice cookers ever. it will guaranteed burn the rice at the bottom of the pot. if you're going to make lots of rice, at least buy a good rice cooker that cooks all around the pot and not just the bottom.

most people are cheap and they will end up eating bad tasting rice, lol. serves them right I guess. that's why i recommend the most expensive rice cooker if you want real asian rice. and thats why one of my point being expensive will still hold true my friend got sick of rice because he is asian american, born in the USA. rice is cheap and is a better filler then prepared food. asian cannot afford more meat, more bread, can food, or anything expensive in 3rd world country. poverty in asia cannot afford them the luxury that we have here. more americans now eat rice because we have been introduced to it since their immigration from the 70's due to chinese/vietnamese/cambodian/laos/thai restaurant, comprende?

That doesn't mean Americans have to buy expensive rice cookers.

You're right, nice ones can be very expensive, like this one here:

Zojirushi, $120

But the capacity of that cooker is HUGE, and apparently the quality of the cooked rice is very high.

Something a bit cheaper...

Initial price is high, but they last forever. I've been using my family's rice cooker for over 8 years, I think.

Depends upon what kind of rice you are talking about. Sticky rice isn't part of traditional American cuisine, but I grew up eating a lot of the drier, long grain types.

wheat or oats is better for you and easier on your stomach then rice. the processed rice we have in the store today have no more nutrition then potato or french fries.
it's main purpose is a filler much like potato, it fills you up real good but don't expect much vitamin from it.
hunger is a serious problem in asia, most of them are thin and small for this reason. asian who have been here since their childhood or were born here are just as tall and big. its what you eat that will affect your growth rather then race or culture.
do your know why their's so much grease on french fries? because starchy food tend to stick like glue, i think that's how glue are made too. rice is very sticky, it can be a substitute of school glue. that's what asian use to stick things together like paper and woods. fried rice is equivalent of french fries as to cooked white rice is to boiled potato.

definitely not true... i am 5'8'' and was born, grew up and lived in asia for nearly 20 years. i am about average for my generation and kids are getting taller every year. maybe you should travel somewhere before you make such a claim

again, asian diet is healithier overall. to say rice is not as nutrious is just as meaningless as quoting bandwitdth comparison values for broadband connections. its a well known fact you get MUCH faster internet in korea or japan, but does that mean they have higher standard of living in general? i am failing to see what point you are trying to make. so what if rice isnt nutritious, people dont just eat rice by itself you know..

i eat it sometimes, but rarely. the rice at the chinese places in town are ok...but i dont think its anything special.

mom only made the 5 minute boil stuff when i was a kid...ive been learning to cook more and more over the last year, but rice isnt something ive gotten into yet. i usually have a potatoe dish or some kind of bread with my main meal.
