Heh, I like rutabaga quite a bit. When I bought them at major grocery chains, cashiers would always have to flip their special book with codes trying to figure out wtf I was buying, and how did it end up on their register.

Nowadays I buy all my veggies from a local Persian store - much cheaper, and much fresher. The best part - they know perfectly every root and leaf in the store, and how to cook them, too.

LOL

Rutabagas are very common here but not eaten by everyone.

I like rutabaga roasted with potatoes, carrots and onions when I make a roast. So much better than boiling them.

Just as an FYI, my wife is a HOT German blonde and everybody at her work wants to fuck her. LOL. (she did nude modeling in her early teens, FTMFW).

I wouldn't brag about my wife having been in a child pornography ring. D:

Guess it's just the culture. I'm very "meh" on beets. I don't mind them, they just don't find their way into my diet that often. And my diet includes plenty of fruits and vegetables. *shrug*

I like beets, rutabaga, turnip root, celeriac, parsnips, etc. but I'm a root veggie whore who has long ago tired of eating the same few "normal" vegetables.

Most likely many in the US are leary of beets because of the horrible purple crap that their parent used to serve them from a can or or jar. Good gawd that stuff can leave mental scars that can never be erased.

One other thing I found out - the older generation has gag reflex when I mention brussel sprouts. I've never tried them in my life before coming over to the US, but once I did - very tasty when cooked right. I heard, they improved the crops quite a bit, and the brussel sprouts of today are nothing compared to what your parents had to eat as a kid.

lol

I bought some brussel sprouts recently that were sold still on the stalk. Looked like a huge Christmas tree of little cabbages. The cashier and bagger were like D:, wtf is is THAT? Took it home, cut off a small portion of the base, put it in a vase with water, and got servings for 3 meals out of it over a week and a half.

The same can be done with asparagus. Cut off an inch of the base, put it in a glass with water, and it will last a couple of weeks.

no, I think it's simply that one's parent's parents didn't really know how to cook brussel sprouts.

they are very easy to ruin, and I dislike them 92% of the time. sometimes, though, they can be great--when properly used as garnish for something much better--like a big ass roasted lamb leg.

My Great Grandma used to make a beet punch, I thought it was delicious. Unfortunately the recipe was lost when she passed away. I liked it as a kid because it made our mouths bloody red.

There are recipes on the net for it. You would have to try some out and vary the ingredients until your punch tastes like your grandmothers. It doesn't have to be exact, but close enough to invoke fond memories.
