schnitzel, egg noodles with gravy, and pickled beets... yum

I didn't used to like beets, but my parents (being german) forced them on em, and eventually grew to like them.

To the OP, just to put a stake in the ground ... The Office ... is not a reality show. Although, it might be just as much reality as the "reality shows".

I love beets & rutabagas aka root vegetables. I'll even take raw or roasted root vegetables any time versus beef. No. I am not a vegetarian. I love my meat medium rare in the Midwest, but well done else where. :sneaky:

Beets are something American parents punished their children with eating for being bad.

That's why we don't eat them as adults.

I'm not surprised.
The damn things make me queasy every Thanksgiving, when I can't get away from them. D:

I've had some that make me gag, and I've had some that I just can't get enough of. I could eat a whole jar of them with no trouble.

lol. pumpkins are fucking delicious. Tell your (likely alcoholic) Irish mate that roasted and salted pumpkin seeds are great with beer.

This. I often ask friends and family to save me the seeds from the pumpkins they carve, and in return I roast the seeds. Just toss in some olive oil and season with salt, maybe seasoning salt. Great as is or on salads.

As far as beets go, they are probably the only veggie I don't like.

This. I'm surprised there is only 1 mention of pickled beets in this thread.

I like them, but a lot of companies use too much sugar. The best I've had were home canned, and light on the sweetness. If you offered me a choice of unknown canned beets, and unknown pickled, I'd take the canned since there's less chance of them being offensive. Good pickled beets are my favorite kind though.

I sometimes eat a can as a snack. I love them as they taste like dirt, literally, but yet not bad at all. I am hoping to grow some this year for the first time. I have no idea how that will turn out.

On one of those health shows it had some woman who went into the ER for rectal bleeding. Apparently in fact it was just she'd been eating a lot of beats and had diarrhea.

Pumpkins are a mostly useless vegetable (not to mention to grow require ridiculous amounts of room), but I agree the seeds roasted can be quite good.

Japanese pumpkins (kabochas) are marvelous and I eat some EVERY DAY! I add them to stir fries that I put in my burritos. Today I had a medley I make with chopped kabochas, carrots, some coconut milk and a bit of maple syrup, a bit of salt. I parboil it.

I have about 2 lb. of pumpkin seeds on hand.

I prepared the ground for my kabocha planting over the weekend. They take up a lot of space but I grew about 120 lb. last year on a 60 square foot plot. I grow them up a trellis I make with bamboo and let them grow onto my concrete patio. The forest they make is gorgeous.

Beets are almost always at a salad bar. Pickled eggs are often co-pickled with beets. We do eat beets, but they're considered a side item rather than part of a main dish.

I did discover by accident that if you cube up beets and cook them long enough in a vegetable soup, the bright red turns into a brown and the beet pieces become white, with an almost potato like consistency. Its quite tasty.

There's lies, damn lies and statistics. - M. Twain

Well, I dug out my beet seeds and I tried to germinate them, no luck so far. they are double digit years old, no wonder. It was worth a try. I'm not sure I have room to grow them what with my kabochas and tomatoes. I have a mind to buy some beets, and try rutabagas and turnips, something I've never been into.

Well, I wanted to say that I really like beet borscht, extra pleasing on a warm/hot day, served chilled with a dollop of sour cream stirred in. Not hard to prepare.
