Why don't people pre-research their vacation?

I've noticed alot of threads recently...

"i'm going to <insert place name here> .. what is there to do?"

Why not research a place you're going to ... find out if there's anything to do FIRST.. then make your vacation plans.

I would never buy tickets etc to Columbus, Ohio... then look to see if there's anything to do.

This doesn't make any sense to me.

have you seen that movie with Zooey Deschanel and jim carrey, Yes Man , where they head to the Los Angeles airport and ask for two tickets on the next flight, wherever it's going and end up in Lincoln, Neb.

ive noticed that many times its because they are already going for another reason (concert, business, family, etc) and would like to add some vacationy elements to it. also, there is a nice range of people/personalities on here so you often hear about things you wouldnt have even thought to ask about.

It seems like most of the locations people have been asking about are pretty major vacation locales. If you're going to Chicago for example, you might not know exactly what you're going to do from the start, but you probably know that there's a lot of things there that will interest you.

Everybody I know does, in fact my dad is retired and spends a great deal of time planning out all of their yearly trips. He plans everything down to what activities are done on what day. Even when I was a kid and the summer 2 week vacation rolled around I could always count on the fact that my dad had it completely planned out. We always had a blast on vacations because dad always checked ahead of time to make sure we were not wasting time on worthless events or activities. I have very fond memories of all the places I have been in this country and around the world....thanks to my dad's tremendous planning.

people who live in a certain area or spend a lot of time there will probably be able to provide helpful suggestions and tips that you won't find in a guidebook that's god knows how many years outdated.

My parents are retired. They sign up for mystery trips where they get on a bus with a bunch of other geezers and head off into the great unknown. They don't know what the destination will be until they get there.

I should start up a business that offers "mystery trips" to old people. $10,000 a pop and I end up blindfolding them and dropping them off at the mall. Ah, the intrigue!

Hey now, he's asking for PRE-research...you know, research before you research.

I'm going to Vegas on Friday for business. Wife is coming along for the weekend, so I asked for some suggestions. Figured the combined knowledge of ATOT wouldn't fail me.

Because a lot of times I'll just pick a place and go. I can't stand vacation analysis paralysis. I know I'll have a good time anyway because it's vacation.

someone decides... OK.. i'm going to Birmingham, Alabama for vacation.
Now that i've bought my tickets... i think i'll look to see if there's anything to do in Birmingham, Alabama.

Why not go:
Hmm... i think i want to go to Birmingham, Alabama. Why don't i find out if there's anything to do there before i buy my airline tickets.

So you're saying people are as stupid as a jim carrey movie?

There's really not much to do in/around Vegas. Red Rock Park maybe.

Why not? I like going to random places and worrying about what I'll do after the fact.
