Why don't the police ever give tickets...

To bicycle riders who ride against traffic?

I see this every day on a ONE WAY STREET. The police drive by and do nothing.

they're too busy watching parking meters, waiting with baited breath for them to expire, so they can write parking tickets

We don't even have parking meters in our town.

Bicycles are 'negligible' when it comes to streets - they dont take any room and cars can still go by unobstructed, so IMO they should be allowed to go counter-traffic in towns, and not force a poor cyclist to cycle a mile out of his way just to get to the next block.

Now, if you want to turn a corner @ 70mph, a cyclist is the least of your worries

Cyclists shouldnt be stopped for going against traffic. They're keeping oncoming traffic where they can see them, in front.

that is utter BS. it's my understanding that bicyclists are responsible to obey the LAW when riding in the street, just like any other vehicle. If bicyclists can do whatever they want, why can't motocyclers / dirt bikes / mini bikes, or horses? bicyclists are not immune to the traffic laws, and if they'd rather not have to obey them then they should stick to the sidewalk. It pisses me off when people on a bicycle think they are above the law.:|

I once saw a guy on a bike ride amongst traffic on a two-lane one-way street, and decided he didn't have to stop for the red lights, so he just went on through, right in the middle of the street. not smart, not legal.

Luckily in Australia Cyclists get treated the same a motorists and a lot of the laws(many of them really stupid) apply to cyclists...he would have been fined in Australia for going against the flow of the traffic.

Where I come from the police give tickets to young kids on bikes and tricycles going the wrong way on one way residential streets. The laws regarding cyclist could be different in your municipality. The only reason they make residential streets one way is to have another grounds for giving out tickets and generate more revenue.

The only thing I think cops should really be giving bike riders tickets for is obstructing the flow of traffic. Nothing pisses me off more than two bikes riding side by side on a one way street, holding up traffic for miles. Bikers need to use common sense. As a biker myself, I NEVER ride on a road where the average speed is over 35mph and I NEVER ride on a road without a shoulder so that I can stay out of the flow of traffic. It's just common sense!

As an avid cyclist, my perspective: sometimes it's handy to go wrong way against the direction of traffic for a block or two to avoid, say, a bad intersection. However, I'd rather ride slowly on the sidewalk if there is more than a couple of cars coming at me. For the most part, though, I think wrong way cyclists are crazy AND stupid, deserving of a ticket!

Then bicycle riders aren't considered vehicles and shouldn't be in the road. If we used that argument, then cars should be able to drive against traffic on a one-way street.

Around here, you're more likely to get yelled at for riding slowly on the sidewalk.

I can understand that. When I see a bicyclist coming at my the wrong direction on a busy street, I have to get over into the other lane...because at any given second the bicyclist could accidently bump the curb and send him right out into my lane...possibly kiling him. It's dangerous.

Because I'm sure the police have nothing better to do... it's not like the bicyclist is endangering anyone else...

What bothers me is bicycles who run stop signs. 95% of drivers do not really pay attention when they are driving through a 2 way stop where the other street has to stop, this is where bikers could, and do, get hurt.

Would've made my day, as well. I have yet to see a single cyclist stop at a four-way stop.

Going the wrong way or driving on the sidewalk might be handy for taxi cabs and transit buses too, but that isn't the point.

Not an easy enough case to make if the cyclist fights the ticket. The majority of tickets are for speeding because the radar/laser makes it a slam dunk case.

Its actually safer to ride against traffic. One, you see the cars coming. Two, the cars parked on the side of the road, the people getting out of the car can see you, so they dont blindly open the door and and almost kill you.
