I just ordered an FOP-38 because it is a 7000rpm monster. I know its loud but I will sacrifice noise for OC'ing performance. I'm just wondering why you serious OC'ers do not think in the same terms. Thanks.

I don't OC, but I ended up getting the FOP38 because the location of my machine itself is very warm...my room get so damn hot with my Athlon in there. I turned off the heat to my room and that helped a lot. The fact that my room is small and I use my machine almost 24/7 proved that I needed more than suffice cooling. The FOP38 definitly lives up to its name in terms of cooling performance, but it is quite loud. After a few weeks of using the cooler, I was use to the noise and it doesn't bother me anymore. Good choice, my friend.

Noise, and a clip htat is a pain to work with...

other than that, it is an excellent performer.

Depends on your dexterity score....you could definitely put a hole in your motherboard with just one slip.

The clip was definitly tight, but I had no problems keeping a flat-head screwdriver steady on the clip as I pushed it down. I think anyone with a steady hand could do it without problems.

My clip broke...I was tryin to be careful and it just popped off. So now im using a clip off the heatsink my T-bird came with. It was a tight fit, but it seems to eork.

I installed an FOP32, that damn clip was a pain in the A$$ all right. I used a pen, with the cap on, to push down on the clip and it worked great. The problem with a screwdriver is if it slips, you have a greater chance on damaging the MB

the combination of my case and my MP3's means i don't even hear my fop38 i must admit though, putting it on is one big pain in the ass(especially if the socket is crowded with capacitors)

I accidentally damaged my 1GHz T-Bird trying to install the FOP32-1 while the m/b was still in the case. The force needed to push the pin down with one screwdriver, while using another to flip the lock into place, really requires that you take the m/b out first since most cases makes this sort of manuvering awkward. The T-Bird core is fragile, and very easy to damage.

After having purchased a new CPU, I took the m/b out, put it on a table in front of me (on some magazines). From this perspective, the installation was easy, and although the pressure you apply is more than you'd expect, there was no risk of damaging the motherboard when you have the CPU/fan right in front of you. Make sure the heatsink is lying flat on the CPU before you push the pin down, since after securing the fixed end of the pin to the far side of the CPU, the heatsink might be up at an angle, its back edge sitting on the CPU itself. Once it was flat on the CPU, I used a medium sized Philips screwdriver to push to pin down since its head would stick and hold fine in the pin. No risk of slipping off. Just make sure that the fan is aligned properly since the hook on the end of the pin might be slightly out of alignment with the plastic tab that you slip the hook onto.

When I was doing this, I noticed there are several ways to apply uneven pressure to the CPU which I wouldn't have noticed looking DOWN onto it. I'll never install another T-Bird fan with the board in the case again...

Just wait for a couple of months. When your system is off and your ears are still ringing from the noise that fan makes...

Eeeek dont impale your board put those screwdrivers away. I use something wider like a putty knife or something like that. I have this cheese grater that I swear by on my FOP32. As well as having done a hardmod OC and having some temp reading issues I've had my HS off and on more times than I care to count. The only problem was having the clip spring apart a few times I've yet to hurt anything. It never gets much easier I just got used to being on the edge of panic just before it clips in everytime.

I had a guy in a store turn one on for me.. cause I don't have one or anything.. and it made this terrible little high pitched, shrill whine.. it would drive me nuts.. I mean, my machine is loud.. but it's good loud.. not whine loud.. I hear it cools real good though..

hm... it's mainly the noise thats a problem, not much for me cause the 10 other fans i have in the case produce a nice hum that drones everything out... i'm lookin into spending a little time "modding" it though cause i found the weight of it is tilting it just a bit on my socket, not enough to effect cooling, cooling is great, but i find the noise goes from high pitch whine to regular hum if i compensate the tilt with my hand (just push slightly on the bottom side affected by gravity) ... holding it flat and in position seems to help the noise a bit

Hey, it's just a matter of knowing where to put the screwdriver - it's easy!

"i found the weight of it is tilting it just a bit on my socket"

Are you using the clip? Not even the Hedgehog tilts if properly installed

I love my FOP-38.. Sounds just a tad bit louder from all the other fans I got going. Plus I'm so use to the sound from work in ET shop. With all those electronics need cooling, talk about noise. Its astonishing when I turn off my computer how quiet my house is, you could here a roach run across if I had any.

is it the whining sound your monitor makes after being on for 3 years?

what about that noise reduction stuff you can get at the car audio places you could do a lil customizing like dat

also here's a tip when things are submerged in water they arent as loud maybe you FOP38 owners should put your case's in tubs of water

Actually...if you are really that afraid of scratching the motherboard, just unclip the pan from the heatsink and just apply pressure to the retaining clip and seat it in the notch with some needle nose or good tweezers. This is what I did and I had no problem. The noise is no big deal to me as I have 4 other fans in the case so they sort of drown out each other.

Using a screw driver seems idiotic to me. Just grab the side of the clip with a needle nose , pull down, and use your thumb on top of the clip to help push it down. Easy and you cant damage your mobo!
