I accidentally damaged my 1GHz T-Bird trying to install the FOP32-1 while the m/b was still in the case. The force needed to push the pin down with one screwdriver, while using another to flip the lock into place, really requires that you take the m/b out first since most cases makes this sort of manuvering awkward. The T-Bird core is fragile, and very easy to damage.
After having purchased a new CPU, I took the m/b out, put it on a table in front of me (on some magazines). From this perspective, the installation was easy, and although the pressure you apply is more than you'd expect, there was no risk of damaging the motherboard when you have the CPU/fan right in front of you. Make sure the heatsink is lying flat on the CPU before you push the pin down, since after securing the fixed end of the pin to the far side of the CPU, the heatsink might be up at an angle, its back edge sitting on the CPU itself. Once it was flat on the CPU, I used a medium sized Philips screwdriver to push to pin down since its head would stick and hold fine in the pin. No risk of slipping off. Just make sure that the fan is aligned properly since the hook on the end of the pin might be slightly out of alignment with the plastic tab that you slip the hook onto.
When I was doing this, I noticed there are several ways to apply uneven pressure to the CPU which I wouldn't have noticed looking DOWN onto it. I'll never install another T-Bird fan with the board in the case again...
