For the first 6 months when it was released, there were 10s of hatred threads about this crappy OS. Then suddenly I start seeing the Windows 7 forums go almost dead and the Windows 8 / 8.1 soooooo busy.

how come everyone started using this piece of junk OS all of a sudden?

please don't say it's faster it may boot faster but to actually start using a program properly it's not. it has an optimized boot that gets to the desktop almost instantly but that's about it. rest eveyrthing sucks about it starting from the way it connects to a VPN etc. etc....

I only use it because my laptop doesn't have official win 7 drivers

Honestly we have plenty of threads as it is, most of which you've participated in.

I've been using Win 8 since 10/2012. all my programs run with no problem. I still have an image of my old Win 7 drive, never bothered to restore it so far.

I always jump on latest OS regardless(was usiing Win8 since Oct 2012), installed Win8.1 this morning and expect to be using Win9 as soon as its official.

I just move with the times and try to keep on the latest OS.

I see, what i like about Windows 8 is the fact that it supports new hardware like the new Haswell CPU and SSDs better. Everytime I look at a desktop with Windows 7 though I miss it all over and miss that awesome interface it had.

Partly because we are tech enthusiasts so we tend to be on bleeding edge

I am debating on going straight to 8.1 on my new build

in what way? like I know how to use it perfectly now and have gotten accustomed to using the metro start screen. Using Windows 8.1 RTM since 1 month now and no problems but everytime I see a Windows 7 PC at work I miss its interface so much. you know how like when we jumped ship to Vista we kept missing XP? I feel this Windows 7 is gonna even give us that feeling for longer.

Btw with regards to your first post it's not a piece of junk IMHO,also with regards to your Win7 statement well I felt the same for DOS 6.22 in those very old days, hated Windows back then but had to change and accept nothing lasts forever.

I am no longer using Win 8 - it has been replaced by 8.1. BTW, OP assumes a fact not in evidence by use of the word "everyone."

I have had a copy of every version of Windows for the desktop up until now (I did not have NT or Server versions after 2008) so I would say there is a good possibility I will have a copy of 8 at some point. It just happens. The longer an OS is out, the increasing possibility you will get a new machine at some point that has it.

The only "downgrade" I have ever done was going from Vista to XP on a laptop, and that was really only because Vista ran so slowly on a laptop with 2 GB of RAM. 8 doesn't have that problem, so I am sure if I do get something with 8, I will just leave it on there, and adjust. So far, my experience with 8 was only a couple weekends. I didn't like it, but I didn't really hate it either. Just unnecessarily difficult due to the curve.

I still use Windows 7 but will upgrade maybe once Windows 8.1 comes out.

So no I do not use Windows 8 and never will.

Little reason really exists to refuse using WIN8. Don't like the UI? Install one of 1000 plugins available and you have essentially a faster WIN7, with better tools. Personally I'm currently using a more recent leak of 8.1 and it's very good. I haven't installed any UI replacement yet.

I use both, still prefer 7. And everyone isn't using 8, 7 has a much larger market share.

Win7 works with extenders other than XBOX 360, Win8 doesn't.
Win7 has far better compatibility with 3rd party media center plugins.
Win7 still has better compatibility with most imaging software, although that situation will improve with time.

But I agree that once StartIsBack is installed, the Win8 experience is dramatically improved to the point it is probably better than 7 for most users.

Because its a lot faster for a start, even basic desktop usage. And get over the "junk" OS thing, its as hilarious as Windoze and M$. What are you, 10 yrs old?

win 8 is crap on the interface side and technical improvements are not so worth to upgrade, I dont even know why users with SSDs keep arguing with boot time
oh and, my 2 year old win 7 installation boots faster than the new win 8 so...

Its simple really, once W8 came out, MS slowly ceased selling W7. Try buy a Windows 7 PC today from any common vendor. All those poor bastards saddled with that OS are on those forums trying to figure out to make the damn thing do what they want it to do.

Wrong 7 is still for sale, and a downgrade license to use it is included with any Win8 PC. As far as getting a new PC with Windows 7, is Newegg a common enough vendor for you?

They have 336 Desktops for sale with win 8, and 578 with Window 7. You can also still get Windows 7 from any major PC maker, such a Lenovo, Dell, HP, etc.

Forum users is hardly everyone. In fact it's quite few in general. looks like the natural migration of progression to me. It happens and using an OS that will gradually be discontinued with use and support seems like a fruitless endeavor. If you must eventually succumb to it, then might as well learn the new UI behaviors now and get It over with.
8.1 comes out soon, it has the start button back and fixes many other issues. Maintaining hatred just leaves one to be a bitter old guy who can't get with the times.

I am using Windows 7 and most probably will for several more years. The main reason being I refuse to pay for something that looks like colouring book for 3 years old with awkward controls, and where I need to do all sorts of voodoo for it to resemble Windows. I am also very conservative, and simply require classic looks and controls. Windows 8 does NOT have that.
It might be "faster" (how do you measure such statement?...), but Windows 7 is fast enough. I also couldn't care less about boot time, plus I don't trust the new super fast boot feature, thinking it's more like resume from sleep rather than real loading.

Still using 7. As has been said 1,000x, there's nothing that compelling about 8 for many to use it. People patting themselves on the back for how hip they are for using a simple OS are just being silly- it doesn't take any more brainpower or being 'with it' to use Windows 8 anymore than it does to leave all the shovel-ware on your PC. It's just that many prefer not to. So someone uses say "HP Launcher App!" rather than Explorer. (Or thinks Metro is all the rage). Well congrats to you- you're not a genius, you just settle for whatever is on your PC- kind of like my Grandma.

I have it because it was free and the choice was between:

- Mess about with drivers to install windows 7, it couldn't find drivers for the CD drive of all things and wouldn't install (even though it was being installed from a USB drive), it probably wanted x79 chipset drivers, maybe SATA drivers... either way I couldn't be bothered to find out

- Mess about with metro and try to eliminate it with windows 8

I made my choice, I would have spend much much longer trying to get windows 7 to install if I didn't know about start8 though.
