Why get a gf4 ti4200 64meg over the 128meg? (UPDATE: You don't)

yes, the 64meg version comes w/500 mhz memory vs 444mhz for the 128meg version.

but wont the additional mem make the 128mb version faster?! and what;s the max that each flavor can overclock to (using the stock fan)?

edit: "it makes sense to go with the 128MB card because of the demands of future games in spite of the fact that the memory is clocked lower than the 64MB version. "

ok, found out that the 128mb version comes w/4ns ram. that means a theorectical max of 500mhz. anyone have #'s on the 64mb version?

but anandtech's article actually pushed it to 540mhz using 4ns ram and stock fan. HOW COULD THEY O/C PAST THE THEORECTICAL MAX???

Overclocking past the theoretical max is nothing new. The theoretical max of any processor is its rated speed. It always depends on the individual chip itself; some is more capable than others.

For overclockers and those that upgrade every 6 months or so I see little or no reason to spend the extra money on the 128MB version. Even when clocked at the same speed, there is very little (if any) performance difference between the two versions. Heck, use the extra $20 saved and get a faster CPU, CDRW or a better motherboard.

I would agree with Mark0999, with the stipulation that you plan on buying a new card in six months when the next round of cards are released. I know there is a small population of enthusiasts that do buy 2 video cards every year, but I'm confident that most users do not do this.

For today's games, the 64MB version will run FASTER than the 128MB version if neither are overclocked. While it appears that the 128MB version can easily be overclocked to the 64MB stock speed, the 64MB version should be able to be overclocked further as well. The 64MB version would be the smarter choice for today's games based on that reason alone.

However, if you plan on keeping your video card for a while (like 99% of us), go with the 128MB version. As stated above, the larger amount of memory will help with future games that are using larger textures. From what I've heard, Doom III will take advantage of larger memory sizes on video cards. So if you're planning on playing this game (and from the looks of it, who wouldn't?) and you don't plan on upgrading within the next 6 months again, get the 128MB version.

The GF4 is already well into its 6 month cycle and I'd be expecting NV30 to come in a month or two.
