There are some games that don't work on it, but almost all new games work fine. I use W2K exclusively and all of my games work fine.

Um....stability, stability, stability.

<< also does it support the Geforce 3? >>

Fully.

Actually, a lot of games are now being supported by Windows 2000. Recently release games such

as Diablo 2 and Tribes 2 are supported by Windows 2000. Windows 2000 in my opinion is a lot

more stable than Windows ME or 98SE. Also my opinion, Nvidia Geforce line has the best

driver support, whether its Windows 98 or Win2k. So you should have no problem finding

driver support for your Geforce 3. The only problem I had with Win2k was support for my

Aureal 2500, I had to switch back to SB Live value. I wish you the best of luck.

my roomate gets constant BSODs on his win2k machine, like at least once a day - something that rarely happens to my win98se machine if ever. his puta is a stock dell, the only add-on was a tv card and there is no irq conflict i could guarantee you that... he is seriously considering a switch. the only game he play right now is counter-strike, and i was wondering if his poor tnt2 m64 would fare better in 98SE in OGL...

<<get xteq-x setup and you could change the BSOD colors and many more >>

Wow! I need to explore that program. Didn't know you could change that. I see what else I can change (which will probably lead to more BSODs! )

To address the original question. Older games can be iffy in Win2k. Running things in compatibility mode helps for some, but not all games which have Win2k issues.

It is a truly different OS/kernel architecture vs Win9* which are basically GUI fronts for DOS.

I've used Win2k already, and I don't really like or dislike it that much. If you're running a server, then of course, Win2k is definitely better than Win9x. As for stability, I'd have to run it at home - I only used it for a few weeks in my OS class at college. It did lock up on me a few times though, once during the install, and twice while it was up and running. It does take a bit of getting used to, but it doesn't seem all that bad. If Win98 does the job, keep it. I personally like 98SE; just waiting for Linux to improve a bit more before moving to it. Plus, a DirectX emulator for linux would REALLY be nice too...

yeah, in my last days of 98 I change them to magenta. It got really obnoxious crashing 3 times a day at the very least.

i dunno what this whole thing about stability is, all i do on my computer is web brouse play games pretty much, if it crashes i could restart, big freakin deal... not that it crashes that often either, if i do something dumb i know i would crash it anyway. games run better in win98se both in d3d and ogl most times, with my radeon in particular. as for those who appreciate its features, its great for them but win2k really has nada to offer me...

ummm...right. And if it crashes while you're working on a document? If you're in the middle of a game? I would get really mad if my system did that. As for your claim that 98SE runs games better, that's a bunch of BS as long as you have the latest drivers and such.

Actually, I'm running Windows 2000 Server w/ a VisionTek GeForce3 460Mhz 64Mb DDR AGP card and it is FAST and running FINE! no driver problems at ALL (running Nvidia reference drivers 12.41), no video problems, no drops, no bluescreens, NO DIFFICULTY! I'm not even running Service Pack 2 and I've had absolutely no problems!

last time i checked, most conclusive reviews said the SE is always ahead of 2k by hearty 10fps plus minus. radeon w2k drivers are just becoming barely usable, still behind the w9x drivers by a huge margin. go check for yourself at the rage3d board.
if the machine crashes while i am working on a document, there isnt much to worry, thats what autobackup thing is for, the fact i got it down to a habit to save every time i work out something major doesnt hurt either. besides, i never had an essay to write past several months anyway. in the middle of a game? NEVER. it SE never crashed on me in the middle of a game, better not shuffle your drivers if that was the case with your computer.

LET ME SAY THIS AGAIN: STABILITY IS OVERRATED

mine only crashes when i kill the system resources due to my own stupidity, never in the middle of the game unless i am experimenting with overclocking. in fact it is a statistically proven fact win9x is more tolerant to overclocking than win2k is. win9x for me, thank you very much.
