Why Halo and the XBox controller is just as good as a k/m combo.

I couldn't believe it until I played it today. K/m have always been better than using a controller. It's more accurate and easier to control.

After I cranked up Halo today, I couldn't believe how well they pulled it off.

Basically, they copied the keyboard/mouse style of play for a FPS onto the XBox controller. With your left hand, it's just like a keyboard (move/turn or move/strafe, your choice) and you can push down the stick to crouch. With your right hand, it's just like a mouse (look around and aim). Your thumb controls the aiming and looking around, while your "right-click" mouse finger hits the "fire" trigger.

I hope game developers of all the FPS games for the XBox adopt this layout for the controls. It is very effective.

As for the stubborn na-sayers, go try it for yourself. It's quite suprising..

Nay-sayer here:

The accuracy of the joysticks on the controller are far too tempermental to accuratly aim. Thats why your crosshair autoaims some of the time.

The best fps control setup I ever used on a console was with Turok on the N64. It was far more precise for games of that nature.

And nothing will ever be as precise as my optical mouse.

I've got to agree with Radeon. The Halo w/Xbox controls are above average, but I still prefer my Logitech mouse and sweet WASD

I also agree on Turok. When I first played GoldenEye, it was really awkward with the default 1.1 Honey control scheme, because I was so used to the Turok controls. Later I found the love of my life (figuratively), 1.2 Solitaire, and the game was awesome from then on.

Once you get the hang of halo on the controller it's real good. Not as good as mouse and key, but it's not like it's ultra competative deathmatch.

It makes me happy to see some TUROK fans here!!

The first Turok Dinosaur Hunter game has to be one of the best gaming experiences I've had on a console, Including Goldeneye. Never forget Turok1.

All of these kids forget that most new games today just rip off older games that did the exact same things and did them damn well.

<< Yeah Q3 on Dreamcast sucked bad. >>

I disagree!! It kicks some major ring hole on 4 player split screen! It's awesome fun...I'm pretty damn accurate using that little joystick. I reckon they pulled it off very well!!!

Yeah, Burger Time and Bubble Bobble laid the foundation for all the gaming goodness we have today.

i jus opened up my xbox and played halo for a couple of hours. at first i was like damn this kinda sucks, i rather play unreal. i played for 20 min then had a small break and played again. i started to get used to it. its not bad anymore and the game is pretty fun now, especially when u play co-op mode. but nothing beats using the mouse as an gun aimer

Mouse movement is proportional to the displacement/angle of movement
Joystick movement is proportional to the derivitive of the displacement/angle of movement ie. the velocity of movement

If you track mose movements during a fps game, you will often find places with VERY high velocities but for modest displacements. An exemplicfication of this would be the "snap shot" pulled off in AQ2 with a Sniper and Q2 with the railgun where you actually kill a person who is not currently in your FOV because you can move your mouse and shoot in less than 1/60th of a second.

This would be impossible do on a joystick since the velocity is too high.

Put simply, the range of displacements experienced in fps's rarely exceed 360 degrees whereas the range of velocities is far greater.

Well perhaps you mean it is possible to get basic K/M functionality out of Xbox w/ Halo. But when you look at my config for most FPS games you would be at ends for wear to bind so many keys, like say CS:

WASD = movement
ZXCV = buy menus
Q = Drop Weapon, E = Reload, R = Spray Logo, T = Talk. Y = Team Talk, Tab = Show Scores
F = Fashlight, G= Infravision, Shift = Jump, Space = Crouch, 1-5 = weapon binds
F2 - F5 = Auto Buys, F6 - F8 = Team radio commands
Mouse = Aiming, Using, Firing, Secondary

Plus, it is very obvious that you can aim quicker and more accurately using a mouse than a joystick. As well as being able to do quick wrist-snap moves like Rocket-Jumps off the sides of walls, etc.

I just got my X-Box yesterday too, and while Halo is a great game, it would be even better with a keyboard/mouse combo. The developers did do a good job so it isn't terribly hard to aim and run around in Halo... It is one of the best done console FPSs that you need to use a controller with. Personally I use the opposite controls of the default ... I use the left thumbstick to freelook and the right thumbstick to move/strafe. Reasoning behind it is that I'm used to playing the N64/Dreamcast style where the analog pad on the left is used for freelook and the 4 buttons are used for movement. Too bad Microsoft didn't want a keyboard/mouse combo for X-Box ... they should have created a "pad" that just had a number pad like scheme so you could do WASD and then allow an adapter to use Microsoft optical mice! Oh well, maybe some 3rd party company will make one.

BTW- Quake 3 for Playstation 2 was controller ONLY ... No keyboard/mouse like Dreamcast had for Q3A and Unreal Tournament ... And they didn't do a good job of using the controller... That sucked big time.
