Why hasn't someone made a MB with 10+ m2 vertical slots?

Been curious to see if chips like that are available on sites like digikey but does not seem like the sort of thing that is publicly available or maybe I'm not searching the right thing. Was thinking it would be cool to design my own backplane that handles all the multiplexing and power distribution and just need to use a riser cable to a pcie slot. I have about 50 drives that could use a home but it's not worth spending money on another storage box as they are small drives but if I could just spin my own PCB backplanes that handle everything and just plug into a standard motherboard it would make for a cheap way to make storage servers.

I should probably design a simpler PCB as my first project though.

You can buy those breakout boards. That is what bb pod is all about

There's a lot of "mining splitters" available that use asmedia and pericom pci-e switches. They are pretty cheap but they're all 1x upstream to 1x downstream ports making them a pretty poor choice for a bunch of m.2 slots.

Chipsets with more upstream lanes exist but those are not easy to find or cheap. Only semi common ones I've seen are built into 16x pci-e to 4qty m.2 slot devices.

Bumping an old thread: we have PCIe risers for mining; does anyone know about M2 risers?
The closest thing I've seen is a board with 3 slots from SQRL.
Or, like a board or flex adapter to PCIe 4x.

A board with ton of m2 slots on it. And each slot would have a small vertical plate on it to hold the ssd. Yeah they take up a lot of mb real estate space when laying on the mb, but standing up would take up a lot less space. Why wouldn't a configuration like this work?

The only M2 risers I’ve seen are a PCIe card. They can range from holding 1 M2 card to 4 with a special controller. Some are just a holder for an M2, though, and needs a SATA connector to use them.

I still have a PCIe 2.0 board. I got an NVMe to PCIe adapter, and it works so much faster at 4x than even SATAIII.
