Why hasn't there been much talk of the V5 5500 lately?

No flames please, but what's the deal? Seems as though no one cares anymore. We still see reviews of GF2's scattered ALL over the place (make it stop!!) but hardly anything on the Voodoo 5 5500.

Even here on the BBS, everyone is always talking about the GF2/GF2 MX, but no one discusses the 5500.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Of the 3 biggest computer malls here in HK, I've only seen it on sale in 3 shops out of over 100 shops.....But the GeForce 2 GTS is EVERYWHERE.

I've heard that the each shop only has 1 to 3 V5 in stock. They don't get enough from the dealer in HK.

I "rented" it from EB and returned it in 5 days. Although it was faster in Unreal and UT, no way was it 300 bucks faster. IMHO it wasn't even worth 150 bucks to upgrade from my V3 3000. I haven't seen the Nvidia products in action, but it will take something much better to catch my attention.

"Seems as though no one cares anymore", that's exactly right no one does care anymore.

We've seen it in action and it was disapointing to say the least. Six months to a year from now there will be lots of T&L games (Ultima Online 2 for example) and a GeForce256/GTS will kick ass in those. But the V5 will suck. You wont be able to play the game at the highest detail levels simply because your $300+ video card wont be able to handle it. If you're going to pay that kind of money spend it on something that you can hold onto for a while.

The V5 6000 will probably be faster than a GF2 simply because it has so much raw power, but $600 for a video card? Give me a f_cking break! Until 3dfx actually comes out with a product that is worth buying it's Nvidia for me!

NFS4 - the V5 5500 came out a while ago and there is only one version of it. Once you do your initial review, what more is there to say? Since NVIDIA sells chips, there are tons of boardmakers out there and they all send boards to at least some review sites. So there is a never-ending series of reviews that come out. On top of that, there are two main versions, 32 meg and 64 meg, of the GTS so that starts another whole series of reviews.

NVIDIA also is doing open beta development of their drivers (anyone who thinks the new drivers are really &quot;leaked&quot; is not thinking it through). Since their FSAA was not that great in the initial release, the new drivers are pounced upon by websites that need a constant steam of new content.

3dfx has continued to mess up the release of the new cards. No 6K's. No 4500's. No PCI versions. All of these would create more reviews and more interest but they can't make them because they do not have enough chips. They delayed getting the boards out so late that school is now out. There would have been more buzz if they had made it by early May. Online stores still do not have stock so many people (I'm in that list) haven't even had a chance to get the card. I spend much more time outdoors in the summer so I'm less likely to go outside.

I have seen the 6K in action and I was impressed.

I should be getting my hands on a 5500 fairly soon and I will post my impressions when I get one.

I'm also going to try and do an interview over at NVIDIA like I have done with 3dfx. I like both companies and work close to both of them so I'll see what I can do.

Well, about 2 weeks ago I was alomst certain that my next card would be a Voodoo 5 5500, but after seeing all the negative feedback on it, I reckon it's not such a great idea - it simply won't last me long enough.

I would go for the GTS, but I'm put off by the memory bandwidth limitations, so I think I'm going to wait - perhaps for the NV 20, or perhaps for something else. But it's going to have to be better than anything that's out at the moment


(having said that, I might not be able to resist the lure of the CLAP2...)

I tried Voodoo5 5500 for two weeks and were very impressed by 4xFSAA. It looks extremely beautiful for Ultima IX. However, the 5500 doesn't have enough power to do it, the 6000 is the choice for 4xFSAA. But $600 for for Voodoo5 6000? It is too rich for my blood! I hope that Voodoo5 6000 can be had for $420 like a GeForce GTS 2 64MB, then I will buy one for sure.
