Why Im always losing my connection?

Recently I installed a WiFi network at home. I have a desktop in the basement and a laptop at the second floor. My router is a Linksys 802.11B BEFW11S4 version 4 with the latest firmware installed. My laptop has a PCMCIA Intel PRO/Wireless 2011B card with the latest drivers.

My problem is that when I open my laptop and go on the internet my desktop and/or laptop lose connection. (Not very long, only 30-60 seconds and then the connection works again by itself, I don't have to touch anything... it just comes and goes..). However, when my desktop is the only one running I don't have any problem. (no lost of connection)

Do you have any idea what might be the problem?

Thank you in advance!

do a search for drop in the network forum, I am having the same problem, it could be a number of things, you just need to check em one by one

hit the threads that pop up when you search and good luck!

I think I narrowed my problem down to SSID broadcasting and the zero configuration service bug.

im crossing my fingers.

If your signal is good and you're occasionally losing throughput, it sounds like the Wireless Zero Config problem.
After you connect to the router, go into the services dialog (Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services) and stop the Wireless Zero Config service near the bottom of the list. That should keep your connection steady.
Of course, if you disconnect (such as after restarting the system or losing signal) then you'll have to start the Zero Config service long enough to connect, and then stop it again.
It's an annoying "feature" built into XP that we're hoping will be improved with SP2.

I tried to stop the Wireless Zero config service but without success.

It's not happening occasionnaly, it's happening everytime: When I boot up my laptop my desktop lose connection.

Did you stop the Zero Config on the desktop or laptop?
It sounds like what may be happening is that the desktop is noticing a wireless signal from the laptop (assuming the desktop is also using wireless) and trying to see if it's better off connection to that.
Another thing to try is making sure that both computers are set to connect to access points only (or infrastructure mode only, whatever it says in the wireless connection properties).

My desktop is connected directly to the router and the router is connected to my DSL, so no my desktop isn't wireless.

I disabled Zero config on both, the desktop and laptop.

is your router set to broadcast SSID? Check your router settings. If there is another access point nearby your device may be trying to connect to it as well.

when you click on 'repair' in your connections settings does your connection jump back on? thats what is happening to me.

I am still researching this issue because the wirless zero config bug wasn't my particular problem. First one of my laptops was showing this symptom, but now that one is fixed. However, as soon as the problem went away, another one of my laptops is now showing the problem. It MAY have something to do with the advanced config tab (allowing device to connect to non-preferred networks yadda yadda) when I get home I am going to make sure ALL devices are set to connect to infrstructure only.

good luck, its interesting but frustrating at the same time no?

just wanted to bump this up, my problem was solved when I set both my laptops to connect to infrastructure only, otherwise they will keep scanning non-access points and trying to connect, which drops the established connection with my router.

yay me! finally learnt sompfin frem all dis messes!

I've been having a similar problem. My pc with a Linksys PCI g card will connect to my Linksys AP which is only like 20 feet away for random amounts of time, then just drop and it won't reconnect unless I disable, then reenable the wireless connection on my pc. It's really pissing me off. I'm about to swear of WiFi... I've tried tweaking everything on the AP.

I just did what OrByte said about making the pc only connect to "Infrastructure" networks... we'll see... (sigh)

mmmm this might of worked for me too. I set my pc to infrastructure only last and also disabled the wireless zero config service. Not sure which one did, but i think it was the infrastructure option. So far my pc has maintained the wireless connection for 16+ hours. That's longer then I have been able to stay connected to the AP before by a long shot
