I have used MSI, Gigabyte, Asus, Intel MB's over the years no experience with ASRock, but I have never had an MSI board DOA or die on me, but they were on AMD's MB's a bit picky on the RAM you could use if you loaded up all banks...

anyway

I have had one ASUS DOA, and one Intel/Gigabyte MB die with in a month after I built those rigs.

That being said, I like the Intel MB's the best but they are often to feature lacking for my needs and wish they offered more, but are stable IMO.

Asus MB never had any issues same goes for Gigabyte MB's, I like the copper that Gigabyte adds as it must matter some what, from reviews I have seen the Gigabyte MB's run cooler than other MBs and is something they brag about in their marketing.

Anymore I choose from Intel, Gigabyte, Asus, MSI MB's based on price and features as long as they are all in the price range. From what I seen last few years performance is about the same across them all, and I don't OC so no need in that department for me.

On the Z68 Extreme 3 Gen 3, a mid range, low cost board, has all Japenese solid caps. And they are gold in color. I seen on a couple newegg reviews some people were taking off eggs because theirs came in silver caps lol.

LOL. What next, taking off eggs from the PCB color being blue instead of black?

Oh wait, this is Motherboards, and not Video Cards and Graphics. :whiste:

It's actually a very dark brown... it looks like black unless you put a light directly on top of it.

Biostar and Asrock have the same color PCB, seems Asrock has a better color scheme.

I've only used one ASRock board a P67 Ext4 Gen3 and it's pretty solid and good bang for the buck. Picked it up at microcenter as a bundle with a 2500k. The included front mount USB3.0/SSD holder is a nice xtra. Overclocks my 2700k the same as the Asus board in my sig. Asus board is being rma'd currently. Only complaint is the uEFI isn't as nice as the Asus but it's fully functional. But on the other hand I do like the look of the ASRock better as it makes for a cleaner look. Might just keep the ASRock in my rig

Because people like stuff that is both functional and cheap. Not everyone is gullible to the marketing bullshit that wants them to spend $300 on just a mobo.

IMO if a motherboard has "stability issues" that is unacceptable no matter what the price range. I bought a cheap MSI motherboard for about $40 two+ years ago, has run countless hours without a hitch including tons of heavy usage, benchmarking, games, whatever. So I would never justify spending $200 over $100 because it will be more stable, I think that's a load of bs. Now you will get more features, better overclocking, more slots/ports/cpu support/ram support/whatever on a less cheap board - but there's no reason even a super cheap motherboard shouldn't be rock solid.

My current board is a Biostar and I think I paid around $70 for it, also not a hitch there.

Haven't used ASRock personally but I've only heard good things about them, really.

The only cheap board I've ever had a problem with was by a company called "ECS". Again I'm sure the majority of their products are just fine too, but that was my one bad experience.

Get the cheapest board that has the features you need unless there's something blatantly and terribly wrong with it.

I always used to buy Asus boards for my PCs but when I would build cheap PCs for family and friends I would buy the budget boards like PCChips, MSI, ECS and Biostar and I always had issues with them (bad caps, compatibility issues, performance issues, etc). I decided to try an ASRock board since it was an Asus company and had no issues whatsoever.

When I built my P4 rig years ago I decided to give ASRock a try for my motherboard because it was a lot cheaper and it had all the features I wanted. Never had a problem with it.

I ended up switching to Gigabyte boards though because back in the day most of the computers I'd find with issues had bad caps and the Gigabyte boards had the non-electrolyte caps.

Fixed. :whiste: That's something a lot of people don't understand. Overclocking is a feature you pay for, just like USB 3.0 and more SATA 6G ports. A board is not "crap" just because it is cheap and doesn't overclock.

Exactly, Like I said people ofter try to compare "lower end" boards to higher end ones and just assume they are crap because they read about a "good one" online or someone somewhere tried one and it was "crap".

So, you're telling us that you are unable to accept change? :hmm:

You will notice in my original OP I said several times that the image of ASRock that I had was not from personal experience. I can only go by what I and my fellow employees have heard. It doesn't seem to be a very common brand up here, Canada. I've only seen a few systems with these boards and have no experience with them either personally or using them in customer systems. I am fully willing to accept they are a good brand but that's not the initial impression that I had.

Because Asus spends a lot of money telling you they are the only good motherboard manufacturer.

I used to only use ASUS boards in my personal builds, however, I decided to give Asrock a try on my stepsons xmas build and there doesn't seem to be any problems with it so far. It had loads of features that are actually overkill for him but for the price it couldn't be beat. I still prefer ASUS over anything else, but when I'm on a budget, I definitely throw Asrock in the mix. For my WHS server build I just ordered, I actually picked up a Biostar H61 board that I'm a bit nervous about, but I fig'd for a server build, the board should suffice so we'll see.

I have used Asus and Gigabyte in the past and been very happy with them on builds. My current systems both here and at home are both using Intel® Boards and I have never had a problem with them but I understand that they are not the most overclocking friendly of boards. I have had people I trust who have used both MSI and ASRock board tell me that they are good boards. There are a couple other motherboard manufacturers that I just havent had a chance to try and don't know anyone who has.

I've used Intel boards, they are very reliable, power-efficient boards. The only thing I don't like about them is lack of legacy options (PS/2, etc), limited BIOS and sometimes awkward component layout. For non-K processors, they would make ideal combos, IMO.

Intel boards are usually rock solid but I agree about the other things you mentioned. For example they released an X58 board with 4 dimm slots. WTF, it's a triple channel configuration, the 4th dimm slot doesn't make a lot of sense.

I was a big fan of the DX58SO, superb board but it wasn't OC friendly.

I still have a $40 ECS running from 9 years ago. A lot of people like to give products bad rep for no reason.

No some brands really are bad. That doesn't mean you won't be able to get lucky with a bad brand and get one that lasts 10+ years.

I have always been an ASUS guy... I have owned 10 of them.

I recently got an Asrock (cheap H61 LGA1155) for a cheap office PC and it really impressed me.

Excellent little board.

I might convert to Asrock.

I've had pretty good luck with my ASROCK P67 Extreme6 (I believe that's the right model) that I purchased.

I don't really look at them as a "bargain manufacturer" like I may consider BIOSTAR or ECS.
