Why is bass so coveted?

In music, I like hearing a bit of bass. It makes the music sound fuller, if that makes sense. In movies and games, it's great for explosions and all that. However, I like to actually hear my music...not just bass. I don't understand the obsession with having the hardest hitting system or anything- I want the best sounding (in my opinion and price range that is :awe. I was watching a few videos of that Steve Meade guy on YouTube with 30,000 watts that he boasts and all that, and okay...but why? Maybe it's just me, but I don't see the point in car audio or home audio.

If a guitar sounds like a guitar, a flute sounds like a flute, a trumpet sounds like a trumpet...you get the idea! AND all the positions are realized as they were in the original performance the playback system is working well.

It is ridiculous to have twenty eighteen inch drivers inside a Suburban. It essentially means YOU are sitting inside a bass bin. I have done this before at concerts being a techie/roadie and yes it sounds fun but it certainly does NOT sound like what's happening on the stage.

Those big systems are to compensate for something else that's ummm too small!

No point in that.

However if a truck rides by pumping out 130dB and it's full range from kick drums to highs and sounds like a real jam then I love to hear it. Too bad that's the rare exception, not the rule. And of course the music that's picked to "show off" such systems is rather awful. SOME of it sounds good if played on a good system Too bad most are just bottom heavy.

There isn't any point it. It's so asshats can draw attention to themselves, and all the money they blew on their craptastic sound system. Music needs to be balanced, and it needs the whole frequency range. Bass only eats shit.

The honest answer is that its a money maker for car audio companies. There is a reason why they will drop ~$10k each sponsoring cars all over the country.

Welcome to 1993!!!!

lol, wow, kids still do that heavy bass crap? i hear it from black peoples cars in my area sometimes and occasionally some college/high school kid but didnt think it was still all the rage or anything.

All they do is rattle the trunk and body panels. lmao thats just retarded seriously.
I like to feel the deep bass, but dont want to hear it much. Thats why i got Transducers and a single small boxed sub.
I installed 6 Aura bass shakers inside the back and underneat of the driver and passenger seats hooked to a board, its like a back message and you can't hear it. doesnt disturb others as well and can hit hard without blurring or overpowering the music.

I can understand competition stuff, its all for fun, but on the road its disturbing for other people and in homes. its not cool nor ever was except to other bassheads.
I think its more about feeling the bass than anything, but people are stupid about it.

That's good and all, but it wouldn't be a money maker if people didn't buy it. So people must like it for some reason.

People buy it because other people buy it. Customers are like sheep.

I sold car audio for a very long time. Idiots would buy the biggest subs, biggest amps, flashiest deck and tons of tweeters. People who knew what they were doing would buy a high quality deck, fronts with great highs and great mids, a decent sub/amp combo and do whatever they had to for rear fill.

I did some systems with enough bass that it would literally trigger your gag reflex if you were sitting inside it with it turned up. I did systems with so much treble that you could hear the highs a block away. My favorites were the ones who came in and said they just wanted it to sound good. Polk DB's all the way around, running off a 4 channel, one overpowered 10/12 depending on the car and whatever deck they liked.

From what I've seen on his videos he works at an audio shop and just shows people who want to see it in parking lots and stuff. Eh.

The goal of a stereo "system" is to reproduce faithfully the entire sonic spectrum as recorded by the artist.

To emphasize a particular portion would be as similar as turning up the Blue gun on your television set SO FAR that everyone looks like Avatar.

"DAMN dude, that Blue is so BADASS mofo! Mofo shee, godDAMM that Blue hits you right in the eyeball! I never SEEN so much blue shee!!!!"

It's stupid I agree. I personally have 2 12" subs in my trunk though. It's turned less than 1/4 of the way up and I just enjoy the accurate delivery and thump you can feel. You can't hear it outside the car though.
