Why is displayport a steaming pile of crap?

Nearly every card and monitor I have had since displayport has been out has had issues.

Waking the display is always a gamble whether it be from a deep sleep or just turned off due to inactivity.

What gives? Why are there persistent lingering issues?

Really? I'm not saying that it doesn't work but over the course of more cards that I care to count and maybe 6 different monitors and cables this is a consistent issue. I find it hard to believe that I have beat the 1:100000000000000000000000000 odds of this happening to me with multiple configs

Displayport is pretty unpopular with OEMs as well. It just feels like a half finished product. But on the other hand there isnt really any alternative.

The only problem I've ever had with displayport (not really a problem though) is while/when restarting my computer I can't see my motherboard bios screen. This doesn't happen with DVI.

The single issue which I've encountered with 4k / display port was a flicker which only happened a couple times on boot and a reboot (10s) before logging in resolved it. I would say it was a very minor annoyance at most, negligible in my opinion since it didn't cause any harm.

I've had a number of issues on DP, although they may have more to do with my Samsung monitor than the interface. There is the occasional, random "not optimum mode" message, which Samsung displays are known for. On my 980, there is also a new issue where if I put the computer on sleep and then turn off the monitor, there is no way to get it working again when the computer wakes, and I have to reboot. If I leave the monitor on (and on standby), it works fine.

I don't get the hate directed at DisplayPort. I've run it on multiple systems since '09 and haven't had a single issue to date. The standard size connector is way better then HDMI IMHO.

Displayport is pretty unpopular with OEMs as well.

At least Dell seems a big believer, most of their newer optiplex desktop line features 2x DisplayPort (and a VGA port for legacy).

I agree, you don't see DisplayPort in most consumer oriented gear though.

Lava,

I've experienced issues with DP on my 780ti classy, and now with my 980 sli setup. The issue is that when I wake from sleep I won't get a picture, and I have to unplug / plug the cable from the card for it to work. It only happened twice with the 980's SLI setup, but it happened regularly with the 780ti classy.

Mine never worked. ATI card + display port = lots of lulz. Screen won't sleep correctly 75% of the time, even did the block the power pin mod and changed from went to sleep but would never come back out except after a power cycle of the monitors.

Now I have a pile of display port to DVI converters that make everything work fine.

This is the problem that made me go back to DVI. It happened to me over and over with the U2711. I think I've read that it's the monitor and since I'm not going to change my monitor til maybe next year, I had to go back to DVI.

I had an issue with a Dell 7310 tablet. To get dual displays working via the dock. I had to use an active display port cable.

My rare issues with displayport always pointed to cheap cables being the issue. Apparently many of the people making them do not disable one of the pins and it can cause issues between card and monitor.

But I actively want Displayport to take over everything as it is an open standard and more robust than the alternatives. Given their efforts thus far, I'm hopeful that DP2.0 will be able to handle 8K@120Hz... but that's obviously far into the future.

At this point I have not yet seen proof that a new cable has fixed the issue. Its like a myth, suggested by customer representatives to stall the issue.

I will avoid having to use DP as long as possible. I have two monitors and I keep my pc on for a long time, meaning I don't want to lose all my windows and window positions from monitors randomly falling asleep or turning off. I don't want to wear out the monitors by keeping the backlight running 24/7 either.

I have tried multiple cables. I have also gone as far as to remove that "extra" pin from a cable. Wake problems persist intermittently.

I've only had 1 displayport setup, my current one but it works fine. Maybe it's the way the motherboard sends the wakeup signals, like how some bios's have the option to delay booting until hard drives have spun up.

Had two Displayport displays, one that had multiple inputs and now one that has only a DP input. On the DP-only one any issues I had were fixed by a driver update and never had any problems on the multi-input one.

For wake problems, try resetting your CMOS via the pin on the motherboard. I've found that at least when dealing with a Hackintosh the CMOS can sometimes become corrupt and cause sleep issues even in Windows. Nothing but hard reset of BIOS will fix it. Worth a try at least.

I have this exact issue with my BenQ XL2420Z and GTX 980. Highly annoying. (the sleep/wake issue).
