Well Displayport is a weaker signal on the backend (GPU side) than HDMI and requires a SST/MST scaler to amplify the signal again on the monitor end. So as a result you need a thicker cable for the same signal on Displayport than HDMI. A 28awg HDMI cable can handle 4K60@ 4:4:4 no problems on a standard HDMI 1.3/1.4 cable at runs up to 20 feet, but good luck doing that on a DP cable. You need at least 24 awg cable to pull it off on DP.

The other issue is supply and demand. Large supply and demand of HDMI products, so the problems have been mostly cleared out, and HDMI cables are pretty standardized, and even thick 24awg HDMI cables are selling for like $10-15. DP cables are all over the place, some of them still sell with live 20 pins which can damage your hardware and has less available bandwidth than cables without the live 20 pins, also a 24awg DP cable is currently going for like $110+ taxes and shipping.

Sometimes my monitor just goes into standby with HDMI and won't come back on until I reboot the PC. Had that happen a few times when gaming. Such a POS standard. DVI is better.

Use better quality HDMI cables. In my old apt, I had a PC with a GTX460 card (or cards, I don't remember right now). I was using a KDS 26" LCD monitor, connected via an HDMI cable. I would get "blackouts" every once in a while. Yet, rebooting, I could see the BIOS, but sometimes even after rebooted, when the Windows desktop was supposed to come up, I would just get a black screen. Sometimes, wiggling the cable would help.

I swapped HDMI cables to a different brand, and voila, no more issues. (The "bad" cable was generic, the "good" cable was sold by Firefold, and branded by them.)

That's more-or-less my experience too. Cable quality matters a lot more with DisplayPort at high resolutions. HDMI is far more forgiving.

Also make sure the DisplayPort cable is properly shielded.

If by some chance the HDMI port is mounted "vertically", you can get "sagging" depending on how heavy the plug is. Completely random disconnections galore...

You can imagine how annoying that is when you're trying to watch a movie.

Amazon has the Accell UltraAV B142C-007B displayport cable on sale for $13.43 (2-meter). These cables are supposed to be complient. For some reason only the retail package is on sale. The bagged cable is not.

So after some investigating. It seems as though displayport 1.2 is definitely a bit more picky than the older standard. People with displayport should see if they can revert to the older standard within their settings. Helped on my 34um95 with some of my issues.

It's not a problem for me... but can you explain how you did the reversion? Or point to somewhere that can walk people through it?

My google-fu was found lacking in this instance.

If you're talking about the 34UM94/5 then it's under Menu > Settings, but if you're talking about any other monitor on the market, then I'd guess that they may or may not have such a setting built in.
