truth is stick is ONLY faster if you can drive it well
the way they get 0-60 is usually done with a professional driver

Oh, and I've been driving a stick for the last thirteen years. It does suck in traffic, but I do prefer it overall. Autos are just so boring. Stick makes you feel like you're actually driving something, not just along for a ride.

It depends on the trannies you're comparing, if the only 2 trannies that come in the car are, for instance, a 3 speed auto and a 5 speed close-ratio manual, the 5 speed is going to be much better in the 0-60 jaunt. If you're comparing a 4 speed auto with well spaced gears and your average 5 speed, then the differences will shrink...

I totally agree. I drive a standard tranny Carrado VR6, and I find that driving stick keeps you alert. When driving auto, its like falling into a comma, its so easy to day dream and lose focus. But, when you drive stick, youre constantly shifting and listening to the sound of the engine, that it keeps you on your toes.

Besides theres nothing I love more than driving down a street with a bunch of teenagers and not shifting till about 4500 RPM, letting the engine whine while those too-cool teenagers turn their heads !!!!

My Dad, born in 1942, has never driven a car with a manual tranny. Although, I would love to learn how to drive a stick, especially when it comes the time when I have enough money to buy a diesel truck and have the six speed tranny that is a standard option (and saves 1000-1500 dollars over the auto).

<<Auto's never let you get into the powerband of the engine, they always shift at like 2500 unless you floor the hell out of it - boring >>

Man I'm gonna have to disagree with you there geno My daily driver is an auto and I love it. With a little mitsubishi turbo charger, that torque convertor is a nice load on the motor that lets me spool up to 14 psi as fast as lightening, its quite fun in town. Even on the highway i don't mind either really. If I want to acclerate with some speed I'm gonna punch it to the floor in a stick or auto! I do like driving the 5speed shelby though in both places too! It just feels sportier to shift, and with teh "traffic" here I don't mind it daily either, but I can definatley see how some people would prefer a an auto in high traffic.

ROTF, Then I was a Man at 14 years of age then.

Sorry driving a stick is not hard and if it was a challenge to any of you then I suggest the bus... the SHORT Bus. Sorry even hoping into a Z28 with a 6 for my 1st time, I went out on Hwy 6 and banged through all the gears like it was second nature. My truck is an Auto and when it was stock was still much faster then the manual counterparts in the 1/4, Now with a stall converter I have 31.8" tires spinning like mad if I get anywhere above 1/2 throttle.

I guess with the ability to JUST DO IT, a manual and auto are the same amount of fun to me. Operating a clutch and a gear shifter isn't that hard.

<< Which only comes on late model Porsches >>

No, that is not correct, my tiptronic is seated in a pretty old Porche, the 959...

BUT, it can also be found in Audis....

WTH?? First off, I thought that 959's only came witha stick. Secondly, Tipronic didn't start showing up in Porsche's until the early 90's.

And lastly, even Bill Gates himself couldn't import a 959 over here. So I call BS.

Soybomb, 14 psi??? Tell me that's not stock! You must have had to replace at least the headers if not more. What car is this?

hmm i'm pushing 17psi right now, putting injectors in this week to hit 20psi. I know my VW block is good for 24-25psi with enough fueling.

14psi doesn't mean anything by itself. 14 PSI on a 1.0 geo metro would not equal 7psi on the same metro if intercooled and PNP head.

A lot of eclipses came with 11~ psi stock and easily handle up to 15 psi a bleeder valve, and K&N and exhaust as the only mod. But 15psi using a tiny turbo is not as much as 15psi with a more efficient larger turbo.

Nah thats supersix. I've got a few turbocharged dodge cars though

jeffoxiam: Its a 2.2L turbododge in an 88 Daytona on that particular car. There aren't any aftermarket headers that are proven to be really good that don't cost about 1k, so I'm just running a factory exhaust manifold with a mild opening up. The car was either 9 or 11 psi from the factory. But like emulex says boost levels don't hold alot of meaning unless you know the car in question. I'd take this one to 25psi with little worry if I had a turbo thhat would support it, bigger injectors, and I'd like a more efficient intercooler. My only concern at such a boost level would be I'm running cast pistons instead of forged. Could be bad if I get detonation.

That's the thing, people hear a psi figure and automatically assume it's something big/small. The thing is, that's only the amount of pressure per unit of volume - so psi numbers don't mean much to me if I'm not familiar with the engine/turbo setup. People measure the psi, but unless you know the volume of space that pressure has to flow through, it doesn't really mean much - for instance if you're running a large turbo pushing 10psi, it could be better than a much smaller turbo pishing 15psi.
